Flyweight champion Joshua Van will defend his title against Alexandre Pantoja in the main event of UFC 331 on Sept. 19 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The rematch follows a controversial first-round finish in December and is paired with a lightweight co-main event featuring Arman Tsarukyan and Mauricio Ruffy.
The bout is designed to resolve a lingering question regarding the legitimacy of the current championship reign, as the previous encounter ended in a manner that left the result somewhat unsettled.
The December Injury and the Quest for Legitimacy
Joshua Van captured the 125-pound championship in December with a first-round TKO, but the victory was marred by a freak accident.
This rapid conclusion created a narrative of “what if” for Pantoja, who had previously defended the title four times. His last successful defense came via a third-round rear-naked choke against Kai Kara-France at UFC 317. Since the elbow injury in December, Pantoja has not stepped back into the Octagon.
Van has not been idle, however. He enters the rematch on a seven-fight winning streak, which includes a fifth-round knockout victory over Tatsuro Taira during a title defense at UFC 328 in May. Despite the belt, Van has repeatedly pushed for this rematch to silence any doubt about his status as champion.
Tsarukyan and Ruffy in the Lightweight Co-Main
The UFC 331 card also features a critical five-round lightweight clash between Arman Tsarukyan and Mauricio Ruffy. Tsarukyan, 29, is widely regarded as the most deserving No. 1 title challenger in the division. He holds a 10-2 record in the UFC and is coming off a second-round submission win over Dan Hooker in November.
Ruffy enters the bout as the No. 7-ranked lightweight with a 5-1 UFC record, characterized by four knockout victories. He is currently riding the momentum of a first-round TKO win over Michael Chandler at UFC Freedom 250. While Tsarukyan is the No. 2-ranked contender, the gap in their recent activity is notable; Tsarukyan has not fought since November, whereas Ruffy is coming off a high-profile victory.
