Dolars Aleksanders, 23, was extradited from Latvia and charged with causing death by dangerous driving on August 6, 2026. The charges follow a June 2024 hit-and-run collision in Coventry that killed 12-year-old schoolboy Keaton Slater while he was walking home from school.
The legal process to bring the Latvian national back to the UK began shortly after the crash, when police identified him as a person of interest. After being detained in Latvia last month, Aleksanders was flown into Gatwick Airport on Wednesday, August 5, before being transported to a custody block in the West Midlands.
The Radford Road Collision and Investigation
The incident occurred on June 14, 2024, on Radford Road in Coventry. According to reports from the Coventry Telegraph, the 12-year-old victim was struck by a black BMW. The collision was characterized as a hit-and-run, and investigators allege that Aleksanders fled to Latvia following the event.
To secure the suspect’s return, West Midlands Police coordinated with a network of domestic and global agencies, including the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the Home Office.
Ben Samples of the Crown Prosecution Service said that CPS West Midlands worked closely with West Midlands Police, the Home Office, the Latvian authorities, Europol, the Joint International Crime Centre (JICC), CPS International, and their Extradition Unit to bring Mr Aleksanders back to face proceedings in a UK court for an alleged crime that took place there.
Legal Proceedings at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court
Following his arrival in the UK, Aleksanders was formally charged with one count of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been remanded to appear before the Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, August 6.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) indicated that the decision to move forward with charges was based on a thorough police investigation. Ben Samples of the CPS stated that prosecutors worked to ensure there is sufficient evidence to bring the case to court to pursue criminal proceedings.
Support for the Slater Family
As the case moves into the judicial phase, West Midlands Police confirmed that the parents of Keaton Slater are receiving assistance from specially trained officers. Authorities noted that the family has been kept fully updated on the developments regarding the extradition and the subsequent charges.
A West Midlands Police Spokesperson stated that he has been remanded to appear before Birmingham Magistrates’ Court today (August 6), and that his parents continue to be supported by specially trained officers and have been fully updated around these developments, adding that they thank them for their patience and support during the investigation.

While the BBC reported that he was named as a person of interest shortly after the crash, the actual detention did not occur until July 2026 in Latvia.
