German authorities are investigating a drone carrying an unknown explosive device found near a Ukrainian aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport on Tuesday night. The incident, which triggered a temporary airport shutdown and a midair collision involving a second object, has been labeled a hybrid attack scenario
by government officials.
The disruption began shortly before midnight on Tuesday when an unidentified flying object was spotted near the major European freight hub. The sighting forced the closure of both runways and the diversion of several flights, including one passenger plane, to other airports. An airport worker eventually discovered the first drone near the south runway, prompting the deployment of an explosives-disposal robot to remove its detonator.
Leipzig/Halle Airport: A High-Stakes Target
The location of the discovery is highly specific. The explosive drone was found near an Antonov Airlines cargo plane bearing the blue and yellow colors of the Ukrainian flag and the slogan Be Brave Like Kherson
, a tribute to the southern Ukrainian region. Leipzig/Halle serves as a critical logistics hub for DHL and a base for Ukrainian Antonov transport aircraft, while also playing a significant role in transporting military supplies for the German armed forces and NATO allies.
This intersection of military logistics and Ukrainian assets makes the airport a strategic point of interest. While NATO stated it was aware of the incidents, the organization referred all specific queries to German authorities.
Midair Collision and the Second Drone
While the first drone was being handled on the ground, a second security breach occurred. A DHL cargo plane, having aborted its landing due to the runway closures, collided with an unidentified flying object. According to reporting from Bild, the strike happened roughly four miles from the airport at an altitude of approximately 1,300 feet.
The damaged aircraft diverted to Hannover Airport, located about 125 miles northwest of Leipzig, where officials confirmed the plane had sustained minor damage. Regional police and prosecutors in Saxony, and Saxony interior minister Armin Schuster, confirmed they are currently searching for parts of a possible second drone.
Alexander Dobrindt and the ‘New Quality of Danger’
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt interrupted his vacation to visit the scene, where he characterized the event as a significant escalation in security threats. While drone sightings over sensitive sites have occurred previously, Dobrindt argued that the presence of an armed device changes the nature of the risk.
