FAA Mandates Checks Across Three 737 Max Variants
The mandatory inspection order applies specifically to three variants within the manufacturer’s fleet: the 737-8, 737-9, and 737-8200 models. According to federal estimates, the directive covers 471 airplanes currently in operation. Although federal authorities confirm that no actual cracks have been discovered yet on these specific Max airframes, the agency issued the directive proactively to address the unsafe condition
identified in earlier generations of the aircraft family.
The engineering concern centers on a forward bear strap—a reinforcing metal sheet designed to strengthen high-stress fuselage sections around doorways and emergency exits. Regulators first flagged the vulnerability in November after receiving reports of cracking on older Next-Generation 737 planes. Because the Max series shares a similar design and build process with those older predecessors, the agency determined that the newer fleet remains susceptible to the same crack condition, warning that unaddressed fatigue could adversely affect the structural integrity of the airplane.

Regulatory Oversight Restored for Certification Authority
The safety directive intersects with a major governance shift for the aerospace giant. Federal regulators confirmed that Boeing will regain the authority to issue individual airworthiness certificates for all 737 MAX and 787 airplanes. The agency originally stripped the manufacturer of its MAX certification powers in 2019 following two fatal accidents in Ethiopia and Indonesia that claimed 346 lives, and later revoked 787 certification authority in 2022 due to recurring manufacturing quality lapses.

The return to self-certification follows a trial period initiated last September in which Boeing shared certificate issuance on alternating weeks. Federal officials cited consistent quality metrics during that evaluation window as the basis for the permanent restoration of authority.
The Federal Aviation Administration stated via Reuters that during the past eight months, the FAA had seen comparable production quality findings when Boeing issued airworthiness certificates and when the FAA issued them.
Agency leadership emphasized that the decision follows months of thorough data and safety review demonstrating consistent production quality and reflects the FAA’s confidence in Boeing’s ability to issue airworthiness certificates under FAA oversight. The company pledged to work under the oversight of the FAA in building safe, high-quality commercial airplanes that comply with all airworthiness certification requirements.
Production Ramps Up Amid Broader Fleet Challenges
The parallel enforcement of crack inspections and the return of certification powers occur as the manufacturer attempts to accelerate output. Following a mid-air fuselage panel blowout aboard an Alaska Airlines MAX 9 in January 2024, regulators capped monthly production at 38 aircraft. The federal agency subsequently raised that ceiling to 42 planes, and officials recently endorsed a further climb to 47 aircraft per month.
Federal aviation officials indicate that the organization expects the manufacturer to seek even higher production limits while awaiting upcoming approvals for new variants, including the shortened MAX 7 and the larger MAX 10.
