Honor officially launched its new flagship Android smartphone in China, introducing a motorized gimbal camera attached to the back of the device according to Gsmarena. Known as the Robot Phone, the device features a retractable titanium gimbal system that deploys from the rear module. The hardware incorporates over 100 precision components across more than 60 manufacturing processes, supported by over 100 patents. Honor states the setup utilizes a 2.6g titanium gimbal motor that measures 6mm thin, allowing the entire mechanism to fit inside the phone’s 9.6mm profile, which weighs 248 grams.
Honor Launches Robot Phone in China Featuring Retractable Gimbal Camera
The mechanical arm operates on a 4DoF (four-degree-of-freedom) gimbal system that can pan, tilt, roll, and rotate up to 360 degrees. The deployable camera arm extends from the rear and locks into position to track moving subjects independently while the phone stays still. The camera system includes a 1/1.28-inch sensor with a 200-megapixel resolution and an f/1.6 aperture. The setup supports up to 4K video recording and is paired with an H1 imaging chip, alongside AI subject tracking with real-time auto-framing for vlogging, livestreaming, and video calls. Users can employ voice commands to adjust shooting settings or double-tap a subject on screen to lock AI tracking onto it.
Cinema Partnerships and Professional Imaging Hardware
The device represents the first product to launch from a partnership between Honor and German-based cinema equipment brand Gsmarena. Through this collaboration, the smartphone gains native Log-C3 video encoding, on-device processed LUT color grading, and a dedicated cinema mode that replicates the look and feel of professional cinema cameras.
Alongside the primary gimbal-mounted sensor, the triple rear camera configuration includes a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto lens featuring a 1/1.4-inch sensor size and 2.7x optical zoom, as well as a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens that doubles as a macro camera.
Internal Specifications and Display Technology
Beyond its camera capabilities, the Robot Phone is equipped with a 6.3-inch LTPO OLED screen offering a resolution of 2,640 by 1,216 pixels and a variable refresh rate ranging from 1 to 120Hz. The display features a peak local brightness rating of 6,800 nits and includes an AR anti-reflective coating to reduce glare.
Performance-wise, the device runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage. Software operations are handled by MagicOS 10, which is based on Android 16. Power is supplied by a 7,060mAh Si-C battery supporting 120W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.
Robot Companion Features and Availability
The gimbal system functions beyond traditional video recording by acting as a robot companion powered by Honor’s Yoyo AI assistant. The mechanism can observe surroundings, interact with the environment, and execute tasks independently, utilizing over 100 facial expressions such as nodding, peeking, and dancing to music.
The smartphone is offered in Silver and Gray color options, specifically named Star Trail Silver and Moon Shadow Gray, alongside configurations featuring 12GB of RAM with 512GB of storage and 16GB of RAM with 1TB of storage. Pre-reservations and pre-orders have opened through platforms including Honor Mall and JD.com.
