The Pokémon Trading Card Game will release its commemorative 30th Celebration expansion simultaneously worldwide on September 16, 2026. The all-foil set features 30 unique holographic Pikachu cards illustrated by different artists, classic returning cards including Base Set Charizard, and a brand-new card rarity called Futuristic rare.
The Pokémon Company is pulling out all the stops for three decades of monster battles. The commemorative expansion marks a major milestone for the franchise, bringing both nostalgic nods to the 1996 origins and fresh visual directions to tabletops across participating markets worldwide. For the first time in the card game’s history, an expansion will launch simultaneously across global regions rather than hitting Japan months ahead of international markets, according to industry reporting on the coordinated release schedule.
Ken Sugimori Returns and the Chonky Pikachu Tribute
At the heart of the celebration is a very special card designed by Game Freak co-founder and original art director Ken Sugimori. Having crafted the original artwork for all 151 original creatures, Sugimori has contributed a brand-new drawing that serves as a direct homage to the classic Base Set Pikachu. The card features the distinctively rounder, thicker mascot proportions from the franchise’s early days, styled with simplified modern card text.
This piece anchors a massive lineup of mascot variants. Every single booster pack in the 30th Celebration set will contain one of 30 unique foil Pikachu cards, each created by a different artist and finished with a special fireworks layer over the artwork. Among these are day-and-night aesthetic variations, including a nighttime Pikachu ex featuring the attack Zip-Zap Frenzy,
which lets players fill their boards with basic energy cards to pressure opponents running energy-dependent strategies.
Futuristic Rares and Returning Classics
Beyond the mascot lineup, the expansion introduces a striking visual tier called Futuristic rare cards. Illustrated by Japanese artist YOSHIROTTEN, these vibrant holographic cards depict various Pokémon in striking artwork evocative of hope toward an unknown future,
alongside regional variants like Alolan Meowth enjoying an evening stroll under the direction of illustrator Natsumi Yoshida.
Nostalgia also drives the back half of the collection. The set reintroduces 30 classic cards from across the trading card game’s history, treated with modern foil finishings. This roster includes the iconic Base Set Charizard design. However, tournament players should note that these returning classic prints will not be legal for play in the Standard format but are eligible in formats that allow the original prints of these cards,
as detailed in the official set guidelines.
Booster Contents and Year-Long Festivities
Every standard booster pack for the upcoming set will include a specific configuration: five holographic cards, one holographic Basic Energy card, and one code card for Pokémon TCG Live, ensuring an all-foil opening experience for collectors and fans.
The September release arrives two weeks after the 2026 Pokémon World Championships and serves as a centerpiece for a broader year-long anniversary initiative.
