Tanzanian wildlife scientists have deployed GPS tracking devices on two lesser flamingos at Lake Natron to map migratory routes across East Africa. While international attention often fixes on the spectacular wildebeest migration across the Serengeti, researchers in Tanzania are turning their focus toward another remarkable natural phenomenon: the seasonal movement of lesser flamingos across the East African Rift Valley. Conservationists have fitted global positioning system tracking devices on two lesser flamingos at Lake Natron in the Arusha Region, according to recent reporting from the region.
Diverging Migration Routes Across Two Nations
The tagging initiative is led by the International Union for Conservation of Nature Species Survival Commission Flamingo Specialist Group in collaboration with the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute. Early data from the two tagged birds reveal strikingly different flight paths after departing from their primary breeding grounds.
One of the flamingos moved from Lake Natron directly into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The bird descended into the Ngorongoro Crater, where it remained at the crater lake before flying toward the Engaruka escarpments in Monduli and eventually crossing the international border into Kenya to reach Lake Magadi.
The second bird embarked on a considerably longer northern journey. After leaving Lake Natron, it crossed the border toward Lake Logipi, a remote, highly seasonal saline and alkaline lake located at the northern end of the arid Suguta Valley in Kenya.
Ecological Connections and Conservation Stakes
The tracking project carries profound implications for protecting a species whose global population is estimated at up to 3.5 million birds. Lake Natron itself plays a disproportionately large role in their survival cycle, hosting more than 80 per cent of the world’s lesser flamingo breeding population.
Scientists note that highly alkaline lakes like Lake Natron in Tanzania and Lake Magadi in Kenya may have once formed part of a single, much larger aquatic ecosystem. Lake Logipi, known for its extreme alkalinity, likewise draws massive flocks when water and feeding conditions align favorably.

Conservationists and researchers across Tanzania and Kenya are continuing to monitor the movements of the tagged birds. The resulting data will directly inform cross-border management strategies, identify critical migratory stopovers, and bolster protections for interconnected Rift Valley wetlands.
