Elon Musk's SpaceX Surpasses $1.8 Trillion Valuation

Harvard University’s $2.2 billion stake in SpaceX, disclosed in a regulatory filing, has drawn attention as the rocket company’s initial public offering (IPO) delivered significant returns for institutional investors. The investment, reported by Harvard Management Company, represents the largest single stock holding in the university’s $4.3 billion portfolio of U.S. equities, according to Foxbusiness. This move highlights how early bets on SpaceX have paid off for universities that invested in the company through venture capital channels, in some cases more than a decade prior to its public market debut.

Harvard’s Strategic Bet on SpaceX

The $2.2 billion stake, disclosed in a 13F filing, positions Harvard as one of the top institutional holders of SpaceX shares. Harvard Management Co., which oversees about $57 billion as of June 2025, reported the position in a regulatory filing, marking SpaceX as the largest individual stock in its U.S. equity portfolio.

SpaceX’s valuation has surged to over $1.8 trillion, driven by its dominance in the commercial space industry and Elon Musk’s leadership. The company’s stock debuted at $135 per share, though it has since fluctuated, closing at $140 on Friday after a 0.9% decline. Despite this volatility, Harvard’s stake has proven lucrative, with the university’s endowment benefiting from the rocket company’s rapid growth. Max Chapman said.

Broader Implications for University Endowments

Harvard is not alone in reaping rewards from SpaceX’s IPO. The University of California’s investment arm disclosed a $1 billion position in the company, while Washington University in St. Louis and the University of North Carolina also held stakes. Endowment funds managing more than $500 million returned a median 18.9% before fees in the year ended in June, according to the Wilshire Trust Universe Comparison Service.

The gains come as university finances face pressure from multiple fronts. Michael Rush said.

SpaceX’s Market Position and Future Prospects

The company’s test of the next-generation Starship spacecraft atop its Super Heavy booster at its launch pad in Starbase, Texas, on May 27, 2025, demonstrated its ongoing innovation.
