A stray piece of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket has crashed into the Moon, bringing fresh attention to the growing problem of space debris and the safety of future lunar bases. The 4-metric-ton upper stage—weighing approximately 10,800 pounds—struck the lunar surface near Einstein Crater on the western edge of the moon’s near side.

Independent astronomers first identified the rocket’s trajectory using publicly available data. Bill Gray, creator of the Project Pluto initiative, calculated the impending collision course after the fragment was left adrift in space following a commercial mission launched on January 15, 2025. That flight successfully deployed Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost 1 lunar lander under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative, while ferrying other payloads including Japan-based ispace’s lander.

Because the upper stage lacked enough fuel to return to Earth or enter a stable orbit, solar activity and gravitational forces caused its unplanned return. NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies confirmed the stage had a 100% chance of impacting the lunar surface.

Impact Force and Scientific Observations

Traveling at a speed of approximately 5,400 mph—about seven times the speed of sound—the rocket fragment struck the Moon with an explosion equivalent to 3 metric tons of TNT. The impact was projected to leave a crater roughly 60 feet wide and 12 feet deep, throwing dust and rock outward as ejecta.

While NASA assured the public that the collision posed no danger to Earth, scientists mobilized to observe the event. scientificamerican.com reported that 23 astronomers called on the scientific community to record the impact. Researchers plan to use ground-based telescopes and space-based assets—including NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and the ShadowCam instrument aboard South Korea’s Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter—to study the impact site, measure flash properties, and analyze how ejecta plumes behave.

Implications for Future Lunar Bases and Infrastructure

The crash has sparked broader discussions about the risks space junk poses to future human activities on the lunar surface. With space agencies including NASA pushing to build permanent research centers and crewed habitats under programs like Artemis, experts warn that spent rocket parts and orbital debris could threaten future infrastructure.

According to Benjamin Fernando, a researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory and coauthor of a preprint study on the event, such incidents will happen more frequently as lunar missions increase. Megan Argo, a reader in astrophysics at the University of Lancashire, noted that while the collision carried no risk to life because the area currently lacks humans or equipment, future crewed bases cannot afford accidental damage from errant debris.

At the same time, researchers view the crash as a valuable scientific opportunity. Studying the artificial impact helps scientists better understand lunar geology, assess the multi-modal hazards posed by debris, and evaluate how lunar dust might be utilized to support semi-permanent settlements.
