A US Air Force flight bound for McMurdo Station in Antarctica turned back to Christchurch, New Zealand, after aviation authorities issued a warning over a planned Russian missile launch that posed potential hazards to international airspace.
When a C-17 Globemaster operating under the call sign ICE28 lifted off from Christchurch Airport at approximately 9 a.m. on Tuesday, its crew expected a routine transport run to the ice. Instead, the flight’s trajectory changed dramatically over the Southern Ocean.
Flight-tracking data from Flightradar24 recorded the aircraft landing back at Christchurch at 11:29 a.m., following an operational U-turn prompted by an official hazard notice. The disruption stemmed from a directive issued through New Zealand’s civil aviation network regarding space activity, potentially hazardous to aviation en route to Antarctica.
The Notice to Airmen and the Oceanic Airspace Warning
The sequence began when Russia’s State Air Traffic Management Corporation contacted international aviation monitors to signal a forthcoming missile test. The Russian Air Traffic Management Centre informed authorities of a planned missile launch and associated potential hazard within designated regional airspace.

In response, New Zealand’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) put an emergency protocol into motion. The space activity was reported to the CAA by Russia’s State Air Traffic Management Corporation, resulting in the issuance of a NOTAM advising pilots of the hazard,
the CAA said Tuesday. The agency issued a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) to alert commercial and military operators to the impending danger. In a follow-up statement Wednesday, the CAA said Russia’s air traffic agency had informed it of a planned missile launch and associated potential hazard to international airspace, within New Zealand’s Oceanic Flight Information Region (FIR),
a 30-million-square-kilometer (11.6-square mile) area and one of the world’s largest airspaces.

We put in place a danger area and issued a NOTAM to alert aircraft operators to the potential hazard. This does not prevent aircraft from flying through the area, operators make their decisions based on the information available,
CAA said Wednesday.
Agency representatives emphasized that such notices serve an advisory rather than prohibitory function. A CAA spokesperson clarified that the alert does not prevent aircraft from flying through the area, leaving individual operators to make risk assessments based on available telemetry and safety briefings.
Antarctic Supply Missions and Jurisdictional Realities
The aborted flight occurred during a critical operational window known as the annual Winter Fly-in (WINFLY), when flights resume between Christchurch and the US Antarctic research base, McMurdo Station, and New Zealand’s Scott Base in Antarctica.
Managing safety across this corridor exposes complex jurisdictional limits. The CAA noted that much of the affected Oceanic FIR sits above international waters, meaning local authorities maintain limited control over activities, referring to Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea airspace where it is responsible for aircraft flying at certain altitudes.
When foreign states schedule rocket tests or missile launches that intersect global air corridors, regional air traffic controllers rely entirely on advance warnings to prevent mid-air incidents. While the US Air Force mission chose caution by reversing course, other carriers operating in the massive flight region weighed the same hazard advisory against their own operational thresholds.
