Investigators probing the recent train derailment in ITVX have uncovered a defect on the rail tracks close to where the accident occurred, according to findings from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB). The interim report revealed that CCTV images from preceding services captured the fault, which officials categorized as a track geometry irregularity on the immediate approach to the derailment point.

Around 150 people were on board the service when three carriages came off the tracks and tipped over onto the embankment in East Sussex. The incident resulted in 30 injuries, with 20 individuals requiring hospital treatment, including two people who were seriously injured. The accident caused significant damage to both the train and the surrounding railway infrastructure, prompting police to declare a major incident as some passengers became trapped in scorching temperatures.

Data Recorders and Previous Reports Show Speed and Rough Riding

Preliminary analysis of the derailed train’s onboard data recorder indicated it was traveling at approximately 65mph as it approached the point of derailment, while the maximum speed limit on that stretch of line is 70mph. The data also showed that the driver applied the brakes as the train passed the point of derailment, causing the vehicle to start slowing down. Investigators examining the Lewes train derailment also received reports from passengers on other services describing instances of “rough riding” at that specific location.

In response to the preliminary findings, Lucy McAuliffe, Route Director Sussex at Network Rail, and John Whitehurst, Chief Executive Officer at GTR, issued a joint statement saying: Following the publication of the Rail Accident Investigation Branch’s (RAIB) investigation update, we remain fully committed to supporting the continuing investigation and acting on any lessons that emerge from its findings. They added: We are very sorry that this happened on our railway. Our thoughts remain with everyone affected, especially those who were injured and the family and friends of those on board the train.

Weather Conditions and Embankment Stability Under Scrutiny

The RAIB investigation is examining multiple environmental and structural factors, including the hot and sunny weather conditions during the heatwave when temperatures in the southeast reached the high 30s. Investigators are reviewing the condition of the track and embankment, the state of the train, and the effectiveness of any measures taken to address potential issues caused by hot weather.

The logistical recovery operation has faced challenges because the railway is situated close to a river in a site of special scientific interest, with restricted road access through a residential area. Engineers have temporarily rerouted signalling cables to support the recovery work, and plan to assess the full extent of the damage once the train is removed so that repair work can be understood before services resume safely.

The RAIB stated that its independent investigation will continue to examine the complex issues involved, and a full report containing final conclusions and safety recommendations will be published once the inquiry is complete.
