The same celestial alignment of the Sun, Earth, and Moon will lock into place just long enough for the full Moon to slide into Earth’s dark central shadow, known as the umbra, during the final week of August.
Visibility Across North America and Regional Timings
The partial lunar eclipse will be widely visible across the Americas, Africa, Europe, and western Asia. For observers in the United States and Canada, the shadow-dance unfolds during the evening hours of Thursday, August 27, extending past midnight into the early morning of August 28.
The moment of greatest eclipse—when the Moon reaches peak coverage—occurs at 04:13 UTC on August 28, translating to 12:13 a.m. EDT, 11:13 p.m. CDT, 10:13 p.m. MDT, 9:13 p.m. PDT, 8:13 p.m. AKDT, and 6:13 p.m. Naval Observatory.
While observers on the West Coast will see the Moon rise with the partial eclipse already underway or about to begin, areas in Hawaii and parts of Alaska will miss the maximum phase. In Anchorage, the Moon will rise with roughly 40% of its surface already in shadow after the peak has passed.

The event coincides with August’s traditional full Moon, dubbed the Sturgeon Moon by the Farmer’s Almanac. The moniker references the massive freshwater fish native to the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain, which were historically abundant in late summer and served as a crucial food source for Native American tribes and early settlers. These prehistoric fish date back roughly 136 million years, earning them the label of living fossils.
During this alignment, the Moon will sit approximately 244,581 miles away from Earth. Depending on its orbital stage, the Moon can pull as far away as 252,088 miles, meaning this month’s full moon will appear slightly more radiant and closer than its farthest possible point.
Observers do not need special equipment to enjoy the spectacle. Stargazers can simply step outside with a lawn chair or blanket, though binoculars or a spotting scope mounted on a tripod will offer a sharper view of the 96% umbral shadow as it advances across the lunar landscape.
