Russia Launches Massive Aerial Assault on Kyiv, Killing at Least Five

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine (DSNS) confirmed that apartment blocks, warehouses, and a children’s hospital were targeted, while the Romanian defense ministry reported a drone entering its airspace near the Ukrainian border.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the assault as a specially calculated attack to cause as much harm as possible to people and civilians, citing 430 drones and 18 missiles used in the strike. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that a children’s hospital was damaged, with windows shattered and nearby cars set ablaze. The attack also targeted the Solomyanskyi district, where an industrial center was hit, and the Brovary district, where one man was killed and another wounded, according to regional governor Tymur Tkachenko.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed the strikes focused on military-industrial and energy facilities, but Ukrainian officials dismissed this, highlighting widespread damage to residential areas. In the Darnytskyi district, a nine-story apartment building collapsed, while fires broke out in multiple neighborhoods, including Holosiivskyi and Sviatoshynskyi. Emergency services reported 23 people injured in the strikes.

Source 2 detailed that at least 21 people were killed and 85 were wounded, including two children, with the Ukrainian air force reporting 74 missiles and 496 drones used in the attack. Source 3 noted four deaths and 27 injuries, while Source 4 listed six fatalities, including a pregnant woman. Kyiv regional governor Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, said 20 residential buildings were damaged, with 30 locations across the city affected.

Cross-border incidents included a drone entering Romanian airspace near Galați, according to the Romanian defense ministry, which stated the drone crashed into an uninhabited area, causing a small fire. Poland initiated defensive air operations to protect its airspace, as the country shares a southeastern border with Ukraine. In the Kyiv region, Governor Mykola Kalashnyk confirmed critical infrastructure damage, with at least one civilian injured. The assault disrupted power to thousands of homes, plunging parts of the city into darkness.

Residents sought shelter in metro stations and other underground facilities, as warnings from Ukrainian officials urged immediate action. In the Darnytskyi district, debris landed in the yard of a residential building and on the grounds of an educational facility. A car caught fire after being hit by falling fragments, while in the Dniprovskyi district, debris damaged three apartment buildings and caused a fire in an open area. In the Podilskyi district, five residential buildings and a nonresidential structure were damaged, and in the Shevchenkivskyi district, falling debris sparked a fire near a medical facility.

The Azerbaijan Embassy in Kyiv was damaged by debris from an Iskander missile, according to Source 4, which also noted that 15 people were hospitalized, including one man in critical condition and a pregnant woman. Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko stated that 20 residential buildings were damaged, while Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko described the attack as a night of horror, noting the enemy’s most massive attack left the city in disarray.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that Moscow would continue to increase pressure on the Kyiv regime to achieve “our set goals,” framing the assault as part of a broader strategy. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy called for urgent Western support, stating that air defense systems were an absolute necessity for Ukraine’s survival. The Ukrainian government also sought international condemnation of the attack, with Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha rejecting Russian claims of self-defense under the UN Charter.

Personal accounts from residents highlighted the chaos. Mariia Kalchenko described how her building was hit: I didn’t hear anything, I just realized that my hair was on fire. Oleh Hudyma recounted narrowly escaping an explosion, while Iryna Synyavska described the loss of neighbors in collapsed apartments. Emergency workers continued searches for survivors, with officials reporting that at least 35 people were wounded.

The Ukrainian military claimed to have intercepted 14 missiles using American-made Patriot systems, according to Source 4. The attack underscored the ongoing volatility of the conflict, with Ukrainian authorities warning of potential future strikes. As rescue efforts continued, the city grappled with the aftermath of what many called the most devastating assault on Kyiv since the war began.
