Father Reprimanded for Leaving 7-Year-Old Son Alone on Mount Fuji Trail

A 48-year-old father from Nagoya was reprimanded by police on Thursday, after leaving his seven-year-old son alone on the Fujinomiya trail of Mount Fuji. The boy, tired during the family hike, was found sitting on a bench at the sixth station before being rescued.

Mount Fuji presented a stark reminder of high-altitude risks this week when a family hike turned into a police intervention. A father attempting to scale Japan’s highest peak left his seven-year-old child behind near the sixth checkpoint. The boy, who had complained of exhaustion during the early morning hours, was equipped with little more than a soft drink and some snacks on the active volcano.

The Ascent and the Abandonment on the Fujinomiya Trail

The incident unfolded on Thursday morning on the Fujinomiya route, one of the primary pathways leading up the iconic, snow-capped mountain. The 48-year-old man from Nagoya was climbing with his younger son and an older sibling, who was roughly 12 or 13 years old. When the seven-year-old announced he was too tired to continue, his father instructed him to wait at the sixth station—situated at an altitude of more than 2,000 meters, or roughly 6,500 to 6,600 feet—while he and the older brother pushed onward toward the summit.

While standard climbing times from the fifth station to the peak take roughly five hours, police and local reports indicated that returning down to the sixth station would require an additional two to three hours of descent. The father reportedly told the boy to wait for hours without money or adequate provisions, leaving him exposed to unpredictable mountain weather characterized by fog, rain, and rapidly shifting microclimates.

Discovery by Mountain Hut Staff and Police Intervention

The boy did not remain on the bench for the entire duration of his father’s climb. Around 7:30 a.m. local time, a worker at a mountain hut near the sixth checkpoint spotted the child sitting completely alone. The employee brought the boy inside the shelter of the hut and immediately contacted local authorities.

By the time officers established contact, the father had ascended near the eighth checkpoint—a grueling three-hour hike further up the trail from where he had left his son. Police ordered the man to reverse his climb, descend the mountain, and retrieve the child. The boy was safely handed over to his father upon his return, and authorities confirmed the child was completely unharmed.

Official Reprimand and the Danger of Mount Fuji Microclimates

Upon reuniting the pair, police delivered a stern scolding to the 48-year-old father, emphasizing the severe risks of leaving a child unattended on an active volcano where hypothermia remains a constant threat even during the summer months.

Confronted by authorities, the father expressed profound remorse for his actions.

Broader Warnings for Hikers on Japan’s Highest Peak

In the wake of the incident, local officials and police issued wider warnings to the hundreds of thousands of people who attempt to climb Mount Fuji each year. Authorities urged climbing groups to strictly stay together and adjust their overall pace to accommodate the least physically capable member of the party. Police have not yet indicated whether the father will face formal criminal charges for abandoning the minor.
