Actor Andrew Garfield has admitted that he frequently considers walking away from his career in the public eye. Speaking in an interview with Variety, the 43-year-old star was asked if he ever thought about leaving Hollywood behind and responded, All the time.
Andrew Garfield Admits He Frequently Thinks About Leaving Hollywood
Garfield explained that his desire to escape the spotlight stems from an intense, continuous stretch of work over the past year. He noted that he has spent approximately 11 to 12 months working on straight, back-to-back projects. While acknowledging a desire for audiences to watch his new work, he expressed frustration with the promotional obligations that follow. I want people to see those projects, so I’m gonna have to tell people about them. I get that. But if I had my druthers, people would just see them, and I could go whittle wood in the Somerset countryside and think about what the birds might be doing,
he said.
Shifting Ambitions and a Desire for Quality of Life
Reflecting on how his career aspirations have evolved over time, Garfield noted that his goals are no longer tied primarily to professional milestones. Fifteen years ago, landing a role like Spider-Man was a major career dream, but his current focus is centered on personal well-being.

They’re maybe a bit more philosophical and existential than achievement-based,
Garfield said of his modern ambitions, according to Geo News. Now I think it’s more I want a certain quality of life. I want a certain quality of relationships with my family and friends. I want a certain quality of relationship with myself.
Prior Breaks and Past Career Hiatuses
The actor is no stranger to stepping back from the intense publicity cycle of the entertainment industry. In 2022, following the release of three major projects—The Eyes of Tammy Faye, tick, tick… BOOM!, and Spider-Man: No Way Home—Garfield announced he was taking a career break to recalibrate.

At the time, he described the awards season circuit as a washing machine
and stated a need to rest for a little bit and be ordinary for a while. That absence lasted roughly two years before he returned to lead the romantic drama We Live in Time.
An Exceptionally Busy Slate of Current Projects
Garfield’s recent comments coincide with a period of heavy professional output. His current slate includes the Enid Blyton adaptation The Magic Faraway Tree—in which he stars alongside Claire Foy—as well as the action period drama The Uprising and Luca Guadagnino’s Sam Altman biopic, Artificial. Additionally, he is set to star opposite Jude Law in Wild Things, an Apple TV+ limited series focusing on legendary magicians Siegfried and Roy, where Garfield plays Roy Horn.
Despite committing to these high-profile roles, The Express Tribune notes that the actor remains acutely aware of the intense pressures accompanying fame, leaving open the possibility of eventually stepping away from the Hollywood spotlight for good.
