Penang Neighbour Scales 7 Storeys to Rescue Trapped Elderly Man on Ledge

A 78-year-old man and his 50-year-old neighbour were rescued unharmed after becoming trapped on a high-floor exterior ledge in Jelutong, Penang, following a failed attempt to exit through a rear window on August 22, according to local emergency officials and witness accounts.

What began as a domestic complication inside an apartment quickly escalated into a high-stakes rescue operation high above the ground at Jalan Lenggong Symphony Park, Jelutong. The incident drew immediate intervention from both quick-thinking residents and emergency services according to the Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM).

The Attempted Exit That Triggered the Emergency

The sequence of events started when the 78-year-old resident found himself unable to leave his home because his house key had somehow broken. In an effort to unlock the front door from the outside, the senior citizen attempted to climb out through a rear window, after assuming that his room door was locked.

That effort went awry when the elderly man attempted to exit his room through a rear window to reach the front door, leaving him in a precarious physical bind. While trying to climb out, his right foot was stuck in his window grille while his left foot was on the ledge.

A Neighbour Climbs Seven Storeys to Intervene

Realizing the elderly resident was in mounting danger and growing too fatigued to hold on, a 50-year-old neighbour who witnessed the incident stepped in before professional responders could reach the scene. The rescuer recounted the tense atmosphere from upper-story vantage points, noting that he lives on Level Nine alongside other neighbours who saw the senior citizen in trouble on the ledge.

Observing that the man’s awkward posture was sapping his strength and that his left leg could no longer support his weight, the neighbour took matters into his own hands as he saw his neighbour starting to look like he was dangling more and more out the window. Clambering over the airwell’s parapet, he shimmied along the apartment block’s concrete cross-beam, taking advantage of the plentiful handholds of the window grilles of neighbouring units.

Fortunately, the window ledge was about 1m wide, giving him plenty of room to reach the senior citizen. Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations assistant director John Sagun Francis noted that a 50-year-old neighbour who witnessed the incident then tried to help, but both men eventually became exhausted and were trapped in the area.

“He was so exhausted. Since firemen were just minutes away, I told him to sit and rest, and I accompanied him on the ledge.”

Firefighters Execute the Final Rescue Operation

The Penang Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 1.28 pm on Aug 22. A team of eight personnel from the Jalan Perak Fire and Rescue Station was deployed to the scene.

While the civilian rescuer kept the elderly man company on the exterior ledge, another neighbour in the commotion who had a spare key to the elderly man’s home had been alerted and opened the door in time for firemen to come to the rescue. This allowed firefighters to enter the house through the front door and successfully rescue both men, who were unharmed.

Discrepancies in Floor Level Reports

Accounts of the building’s height during the incident varied slightly across public reporting. While initial reports stated that two men, including a 78-year-old senior citizen, had a frightening experience when they were trapped on the 14th floor exterior corridor of a building at Jalan Lenggong Symphony Park, Jelutong, previous reports had erroneously stated that the incident occurred on Level 14.

The operation ended at 1.52pm. Following the successful extraction, both victims were handed over to the police for further action, concluding an intense afternoon rescue coordinated between alert residents and the Jalan Perak Fire and Rescue Station team.
