The event will begin at 9:34 p.m. CDT, reach its maximum at 11:13 p.m. CDT, and conclude at 12:52 a.m. CDT on Friday, Aug. 28.
Houston Skywatchers Set to Witness 96.3% Lunar Coverage
No special equipment is required to observe the eclipse, as the Moon’s dimming and color shift will be visible to the naked eye. The coverage in Houston exceeds the global average, with nearly 1 billion people across North and South America positioned to witness the event, as reported by Yahoo News.
Global Visibility and Cosmic Context
The Aug. 27-28 eclipse will be visible across Europe, Africa, North and South America, and parts of the Middle East. However, viewers in Europe and Africa will see the Moon set during the event, while those in the Americas will have a more extended view. The eclipse occurs as the full “Sturgeon Moon” rises, with 96% of its surface passing into Earth’s shadow, according to Space.com.
Despite the dramatic appearance, the eclipse will not produce a true “blood moon,” as Earth’s shadow does not fully cover the Moon. Instead, the partial phase will last over three hours, with the entire eclipse—penumbral and partial—spanning 5 hours and 38 minutes. This event marks the first deep partial lunar eclipse since Sept. 18, 2024, and the last until Jan. 11-12, 2028, when only 2.4% of the Moon will be shadowed.

The next total lunar eclipse will occur on Dec. 31, 2028, visible from Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Until then, the 2026 partial eclipse remains the most dramatic celestial event, with Houston and other regions in the Americas offering the best views. Skywatchers are encouraged to find clear, unobstructed skies and prepare for a spectacle that blends science and wonder.
