Europe’s oldest living monarch and Norway’s ceremonial head of state since 1991 was initially taken to hospital on August 17 to receive treatment for a bacterial infection in his blood.
Crown Prince Haakon and Queen Sonja have both canceled all planned events following the update on the king’s condition. Members of the royal family, including the crown prince, the queen, and the king’s grandchildren, arrived at Oslo University Hospital to be at his bedside, where they spent several hours before eventually departing the venue.
Public Vigil and National Response
Hundreds of people gathered outside the Royal Palace in Oslo and in the centers of other major cities to await news, with many laying flowers outside the gates. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere canceled a planned trip to Germany and released a statement regarding the monarch’s health.

While King Harald holds no formal political powers, the institution commands widespread public backing. Recent opinion surveys show that almost two-thirds of respondents voice support for the monarchy, with Harald himself ranking as the most popular individual member of the royal family.
Throughout his reign, the king has served as a unifying figure during national crises, traveling directly to the scenes of natural disasters to meet survivors and addressing victims of attacks. In 2024, the king formally announced that he would reduce his official activities out of consideration for his advancing age.
