Gal Gadot revealed she has had no discussions with studio leadership about reprising the role of Wonder Woman in the revamped DC Universe. Speaking in an interview published on Thursday, the actress reflected on her time portraying the Amazonian hero and offered a message to her eventual successor.
The era of the DC Extended Universe is closing its final chapters, and its defining Amazonian warrior is stepping aside. Gal Gadot has addressed speculation about a potential comeback as Diana Prince. In an interview published by ScreenRant, the Israeli actress addressed her future with the character, making it clear that a return to the cape and tiara is not in the cards under the current studio regime.
The End of an Era Under a New Studio Regime
Gadot first appeared as the DC hero in Zack Snyder’s 2016 movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, followed by her own movie and Justice League in 2017. In total, Gadot appeared as Wonder Woman in six films, with her last appearances being cameos in Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash three years ago. The star made her last run as the Amazonian in sequel Wonder Woman 1984 in 2020, followed by a brief appearance in The Flash, which released after Gunn took over DC Studios.
While a third Wonder Woman movie starring Gal Gadot was greenlit in 2020, in 2022, the DC Universe began a reset led by Gunn and Peter Safran, and the third Wonder Woman movie did not fit the new plan. It was canceled, along with other projects, as part of the old DC canon. The new DC canon, which began with 2024’s Creature Commandos, left behind multiple familiar castings. Neither Henry Cavill nor Jason Momoa returned to play their titular characters, Superman and Aquaman, although Momoa did return as a different character in the universe.
Shifting Signals and Unfulfilled Promises
Gadot appeared hopeful in 2023, telling Flaunt that Gunn and Safran told her at the time they would develop a third Wonder Woman movie with her and that she had nothing to worry about.
However, now, even as a new Wonder Woman reboot is being written by Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira, Gadot said she had not discussed returning. In her interview with ScreenRant, Gadot said she hasn’t “heard anything” or had any specific conversations
with DC Studios or heads James Gunn and Peter Safran about reprising her Wonder Woman or even taking on a new character, just as DCEU’s Aquaman star Jason Momoa returned as Lobo in Supergirl.
The contrast between her earlier hopes and the studio’s current reality underscores the nature of the DCU reboot. While Jason Momoa managed to transition within the franchise, Gadot’s time as Diana Prince is finished.
Passing the Golden Tiara
As the studio looks toward its future, fans are more certain than ever that Adria Arjona is playing Wonder Woman. Although the Andor star has yet to confirm, it is highly possible, as it sounds as though the DCEU’s Diana star Gal Gadot won’t be returning to the role. Gunn has yet to announce the new Wonder Woman, but fans are sure it is Arjona, who is set to appear in Man of Tomorrow in a still unconfirmed role (though some reports have suggested she’s playing Maxima). Earlier this week, the star confirmed that although she still cannot confirm her character, she has been training two to three hours a day on a crazy diet,
and has “muscles” like never before. The upcoming sequel welcomes back Corenswet’s Superman and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor as they team up to face Braniac, and Man of Tomorrow hits theaters on July 9, 2027.
Rather than expressing frustration over her exit, Gadot chose to direct her energy toward welcoming whoever steps into the iconic boots next, leaving a heartwarming message to the next Wonder Woman actor:
“This is such an incredible character that so many of us care about so much, so whoever it’s going to be to portray her, I wish for her that she enjoys this amazing ride with this amazing character. And I’m just grateful that I was granted the opportunity to wear her boots and celebrate this incredible character and everything she stands for.”
