The cleanup effort at OpenAI continues as the company moves to streamline its interface and consolidate standalone experiences into its flagship chatbot. Announced via release notes on July 31, the upcoming retirement marks the end of the line for the dedicated DALL-E GPT experience that users have relied on for direct image creation.
While the standalone tool is disappearing, image generation is far from leaving the platform entirely. The core capability lives on through built-in image features running on newer models like gpt-image-1 and gpt-image-1-mini.
What Users Need to Do Before August 30
Time is running out for anyone storing creations inside the legacy tool. OpenAI has not clarified what will happen to images currently residing within DALL-E GPT conversation histories once the switch occurs, making proactive backups a necessity rather than a suggestion.
Retrieving files requires a manual approach. Every image generated within the platform sits under the Images section on both web and app interfaces. Selecting save downloads the file directly to a device, while copying sends it to the clipboard and sharing routes it elsewhere.
There is also an easily missed catch regarding conversation management. An image disappears permanently when the chat thread containing it gets deleted. For users hunting down older concepts, the rebuilt search function in ChatGPT can help locate past sessions before the cutoff.
