Following weeks of coordinated settler pogroms in the occupied West Bank that injured dozens of Palestinians and torched properties, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a rare condemnation, blaming the violence on a handful of rioters.
West Bank Unrest and Village Raids
A wave of coordinated Israeli settler attacks swept across the occupied West Bank, leaving dozens of Palestinians injured and properties torched amid little to no immediate response from Israeli police and soldiers. In the northern West Bank village of Qusra, south of Nablus, dozens of settlers attacked a Palestinian home with tear gas and stones, injuring seven people. A Palestinian Red Crescent Society ambulance attempting to reach the besieged families was also attacked.
The violence followed nearly three weeks of tension in the area. Earlier in August, a group of settlers began blocking supplies from entering Palestinian houses on the outskirts of the village near Nablus, trapping residents inside. Yussef Abdul Kareem Hassan, a resident of Qusra, told AFP that a handful of villagers were doing work on a house when they were approached by a small group of settlers. Those settlers called for backup and returned with dozens more, surrounding the Palestinians inside the house and throwing stones.
Similar violence broke out in nearby Jalud, where a Palestinian family and an NBC News reporting team and a Palestinian woman they went to interview were assaulted by masked settlers. In Arrabeh, two Palestinians were beaten near the Mevo Dotan settlement. Concurrently, Israeli forces fired tear gas during incursions into the Far’a refugee camp, el-Bireh, and al-Mughayyir, while soldiers also attacked journalists in Hebron’s Old City.
Political Condemnations and Global Backlash
The mounting violence and global backlash have placed intense pressure on the Israeli government. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes in Gaza, issued a sharp statement addressing the unrest.
Netanyahu publicly stated that he expected law enforcement authorities to arrest the rioters and bring them to justice. President Isaac Herzog echoed the sentiment, calling the events a red line. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared that the violence carried out by extremists stands in complete contradiction to the values of Israel. U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee referred to the settlers as terrorists
in an unusually sharp statement cited by AP News, while adding that the half-million Israelis living in the West Bank are most disgusted by a small group of thugs.
Opposition leader Yair Lapid described the violent rampages as a moral stain and said the government’s failure to tackle Israeli violence in the West Bank is a national disgrace. Meanwhile, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the escalation, drawing particular attention to a 20-day siege on al-Mughayyir as a systematic policy of forced displacement and colonial expansion.
Military Response and Enforcement Realities
Despite official calls for arrests, documented footage captured masked settlers storming Qusra and Jalud in open pickup trucks. Under the command of Moshe Pinchi, the Israeli police’s West Bank district made zero arrests.
The Israeli military and border police stated that they were dispatched following reports that rioters had arrived in the area and that violent clashes, including stone-hurling toward Palestinians and additional civilians, had occurred.
The military confirmed it was aware of reports of Palestinian injuries. Forces worked to remove the settlers from the house, separate the groups, and confiscate vehicles suspected of having been used to reach the area. Those vehicles are intended as evidence in an opened police investigation, and forces continued operating in the area to prevent further disturbances and restore order.
Analytical Perspectives on Political Strategy
Observers and political analysts view the establishment’s sudden chorus of condemnation as a calculated political maneuver. Ehab Jabareen, a writer, analyst, and Palestinian citizen of Israel, noted that Netanyahu is pursuing a political surgical isolation process to shield the broader settlement project from international scrutiny.
Jabareen explained that the prime minister aims to put forward a political equation stating there are 500,000 legitimate settlers alongside a few dozen deviants or anomalies, giving the illusion of punishing the most blatant link to protect the wider system.
Beyond public relations, security analysts suggest the statements stem from military fears that unchecked settler pogroms could ignite a massive Palestinian uprising in the occupied West Bank. Recent closed-door security assessments by Major General Avi Bluth, head of the Israeli military’s Central Command, warned that nationalistic crime could spark a massive response from Palestinians. Mamoun Abu Amer, an analyst on Israeli politics, dismissed the idea that the state has lost control, emphasizing that the military consistently protects settlers during attacks while heavily punishing Palestinians who attempt to defend themselves.
Broader Regional Context and Casualties
The West Bank violence unfolds against a backdrop of wider regional conflict. In Gaza, Israeli strikes and fire killed four Palestinians and wounded others. In Gaza City, two Palestinians were killed and another was wounded in a strike on a motorbike, which the Israeli military described as targeting a military operative. Tank fire killed a farmer in the eastern part of Deir al-Balah, and a separate strike in southern Gaza killed one person.
Additionally, an airstrike on the compound of Al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital wounded three Palestinians. The Israeli military stated it struck a Hamas commander who planned to execute terror attacks adjacent to the compound and accused him of hiding inside the facility, noting that medical authorities had been warned on Thursday against using medical facilities for terrorist purposes. According to Gaza’s health ministry, a fragile ceasefire has continued since October, though the military has killed at least 1,313 Palestinians during that period.
In the West Bank, at least 1,103 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces or settlers since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023, according to an AFP tally based on data from the Palestinian health ministry. More than 500,000 Israelis live across settlements in the territory, which are illegal under international law, among some three million Palestinians living under an occupation that began in 1967.
