Scott Bessent Opens G20 Summit Addressing Global Debt and Iran Sanctions

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent opened the Group of 20 finance ministers meetings in Asheville, North Carolina, on Monday, aiming to address mounting global debt and strategies to foster worldwide economic growth according to AP News. The international gathering takes place as the United States advances a growth agenda centered on deregulation and energy independence.

Bessent Opens G20 Meetings Focusing on Global Debt and Economic Growth

Bessent told the Associated Press that the world faces a mountain of debt and that nations must grow their way out of it. During a growth-focused breakout session, Bessent stated that G20 participants identified several impediments to economic expansion, including excessive regulatory and administrative burdens, poorly designed financial incentives and tax systems, insufficient public and private investment, internal market fragmentation, and gaps in workforce skills and mobility according to Europesays. He asserted that the U.S. is setting the pace in addressing these policy failures.

The meetings in Asheville are also notable for the presence of U.S. business leaders, marking the first time CEOs have attended the G20 finance ministers meeting, according to a senior Treasury official cited by Europesays. Attendees included JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon and Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon. Speaking on the sidelines of the summit, Solomon told CNBC that elevated Treasury yields are not a calamity and that he does not see major risks in the current borrowing and credit system.

New Sanctions Target Iran Amid Ongoing Conflict

The international summit coincides with heightened geopolitical tensions and renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran, a conflict that recently crossed its six-month mark. Bessent told the Associated Press in an interview that he plans to increase economic pressure on Tehran by sanctioning another bank under an initiative he termed Operation Economic Outcast, warning that the administration is prepared to exact financial violence if necessary.

Asked how long it would take for the Iranian economy to collapse, Bessent stated that it could happen within weeks or months, emphasizing that the regime simply needs to come to its senses. The European Union backed the sanctions effort with what Bessent described as fulsome support, and the EU issued a statement welcoming added economic pressure.

Bessent also addressed the challenge posed by China, the largest buyer of Iranian oil, stating that all options remain on the table regarding potential sanctions against Beijing for its continued purchases. Rejecting the notion that the administration is reluctant to confront China, Bessent maintained that Washington and Beijing share agreement on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. Additionally, Bessent discussed President Donald Trump’s peace plan with Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov on the sidelines of the meetings.

U.S. Bond Yields and Economic Debates at the Summit

Discussions at the G20 also touched on domestic U.S. fiscal policies and bond market performance. Bessent defended the administration’s economic track record during an interview with CNBC’s Sara Eisen, insisting that the 10-year Treasury yield has remained flat since President Trump took office.

While Bessent pointed to Fitch Ratings affirming its AA+ grade on U.S. debt as a sign of market stability, market data shows that U.S. government debt has surpassed $40 trillion, with benchmark yields experiencing volatility amid pressure from tariffs and inflation. Bessent also addressed correspondence involving the Senate Finance Committee, responding to a recent letter from Senator Elizabeth Warren regarding foreign exchange interventions.
