Amazon has rolled out its AI-powered voice assistant, Alexa+, for free to all U.S. Prime members and eligible Fire TV devices. Previously requiring a separate $19.99 monthly subscription or a Prime membership during its early access period, the upgraded assistant uses large language models from Amazon Nova and Anthropic to support conversational requests and deeper smart-home controls.
The tech giant is expanding access to its agentic AI assistant Alexa+, bringing the upgraded tool to all U.S. Amazon Prime members at no additional cost as the company completes its rollout. Non-Prime users can still access the full assistant via a standalone subscription priced at $19.99 per month, or utilize a limited free text-based chat experience on Alexa.com and the Alexa app.
The news follows a strong customer response to Alexa+. The AI assistant reached more than 100,000 people in the weeks following its initial launch earlier this year, and tens of millions
joined over the course of the early access period, the company said.
The expansion extends well beyond traditional smart speakers, automatically upgrading current-generation Fire TV hardware, Fire TV Cubes, Amazon Ember smart TVs, and compatible partner sets made by brands like Hisense, TCL, and Panasonic. Owners of these devices now gain conversational search, smart-home management, and AI-driven recommendations without needing a Prime subscription. Amazon said Alexa+ users have nearly twice as many conversations on Fire TV as users of the original Alexa.
What Makes Alexa+ Different From Classic Alexa
Classic Alexa relied on rigid, command-style phrasing that often felt mechanical. While it was interesting, it never quite felt organic to use. Alexa+ replaces that with natural conversation. You can flow between topics, ask for several things at once, and skip the wake word on follow-ups because it holds context. Users can also choose a personality mode (Brief, Chill, Sweet, or Sassy) to change how it responds.

Instead of memorizing specific titles or commands, entertainment discovery becomes conversational. Viewers can ask for historical dramas with strong female leads and then refine the results by asking for newer options. Users can also ask questions about an actor’s filmography or request context for what they’re watching, supporting natural-language content discovery based on themes, genres, ratings and other attributes rather than specific titles.
Beyond entertainment, the system integrates deeply with household routines. Deal tracking sends personalized price alerts. Smart home control learns your patterns and proactively flags unexpected changes. Entertainment recommendations draw on your viewing and listening habits across Prime Video and Amazon Music. Alexa+ is able to do things like order takeout, make restaurant reservations, book rides, and schedule home repairs, plus it can control smart home products and answer questions like any other chatbot. It integrates with Amazon services, and can integrate with hardware like Ring cameras.
Hardware Compatibility and Availability
Most existing hardware will support the upgrade without requiring a new purchase. Compatible devices include current-generation Amazon Fire TV Sticks, the Fire TV Cube, Amazon Ember smart TVs and other smart TVs with Alexa+ built in, such as those made by Hisense, TCL, and Panasonic. Prime subscribers can access Alexa+ with the Alexa app, Alexa-enabled devices, or the Alexa.com website. Prime members can access Alexa+ by saying Alexa, upgrade to Alexa+,
or by logging into their Amazon account on the Alexa website.

The company unveiled its upgraded Alexa experience in February this year after years of development.
Subscription Strategy and Market Position
The introduction of Alexa+ as a Prime benefit arrives as Amazon and other major retailers are emphasizing the role of their membership programs as sales drivers that go beyond free shipping. Prime membership grew in the double digits year over year during the second quarter of 2026, Amazon SVP and CFO Brian Olsavsky said during a July earnings call, noting that Prime remains a key pillar of our business.
If you’re not a Prime member, you can subscribe to Alexa+ for $19.99/month. However, Amazon is also offering a free tier of Alexa+, which the company says will be limited by use; for starters, you will only be able to use it on Alexa.com and the Alexa app. Amazon Prime in the U.S. is priced at $14.99 per month or $139 per year, and Alexa+ is considered one of the Prime benefits.
