Reform UK leader Nigel Farage and senior party officials were captured on undercover video discussing secret foreign donations and funding mechanisms, prompting internal party investigations and calls from a former electoral chief for a criminal inquiry.
Undercover footage broadcast by Channel 4 News and gathered by the investigative group Verbatim has thrust Reform UK into a fresh political and financial crisis. The recordings capture senior figures discussing ways to navigate strict UK electoral laws to secure funds from impermissible foreign sources.
Undercover Meetings Reveal Proposed Workarounds for Foreign Donations
Dan Jukes, a senior aide to Nigel Farage, was filmed meeting an undercover reporter posing as the wealthy British-based son of an American businessman. UK electoral law mandates that political donations must originate from permissible sources, such as individuals registered to vote in the UK or companies incorporated domestically. The father in the scenario was not a permissible donor, but the son was.
While standing outside a Westminster pub, Dan Jukes suggested a way to do it by routing money through the UK-based son. Jukes remarked that the other person realized they could do it, and Channel 4 say Jukes was suggesting that the donation could be in the UK-based son’s name, although the money would have come from his American father. Jukes continued by adding that it actually struck him as a solution, before claiming they have done it several times before, in exchanges bleeped out but which appear to refer to other instances where this mechanism had been used before. He was recorded as saying that was one of the ways in which they did it.
Later in the investigation, footage from a lunch in Clacton, Essex, captured both Jukes and Nigel Farage meeting with the undercover operatives posing as the father and son. Discussions touched upon a potential future donation of £500,000.
The son stated that he would be the registered donor, adding that his dad would then send the money to him, and that as soon as that was done and all those conversations were had, the money would be available.

When the undercover team made clear the plan for the UK-based son to be the declared donor despite the funds originating in the US, Nigel Farage replied “thank you” and then both of you, thank you.
When the UK-based son had started talking about the next phase of their financial support, Mr Farage also stated that it was all above board after the son told him he had been in discussions with both Jukes and Reform’s Head of Policy, James Orr about it for some time.
Secretly Funded Polls and Party Denials
The recordings also detail earlier financial arrangements involving James Orr, who aside from his role with Reform UK is a theologian and associate professor at the University of Cambridge. Earlier this year, Orr and Dan Jukes arranged for a US company to fund three influential polls that the party had commissioned, costing £32,500 in total. Results from these seemingly independent polls made headline news and two of them helped galvanise support for the party ahead of the local elections in May. But the public was not told that Reform UK had commissioned the polls and would be arranging for an “off the book” backer to fund them.
Bob Posner, a lawyer and former Chief Executive of the UK Electoral Commission, has seen the key findings and said there should now be a criminal investigation as serious criminal offences
may have been committed. The Electoral Commission makes clear that political party donations include funding that helps a party meet costs and expenses, such as payments for studies and research. Donations from an impermissible donor legally must be reported to the Electoral Commission within 30 days of each payment being made, and a party must return the money to the donor in that time. According to official records, none of the polling payments appear to have been so far disclosed by Reform UK to the Electoral Commission, either as permissible or impermissible donations, even though most of the relevant reporting deadlines have passed.
Reform UK denies any wrongdoing and claims that it had been the target of a hoax perpetuated by foreign-funded climate change activists. Reform UK has launched an internal investigation into Dan Jukes, though they would not confirm if he remained a party spokesperson. Orr is also now the subject of an internal Reform UK investigation.
Internal Inquiries and Unanswered Questions
As Reform UK faces internal scrutiny over the matter, the proposed larger donation was never made. Channel 4 News asked Reform UK if Mr Farage knew the polls were being funded by a secret financier using a US company before the payments were made, or if he was told about them later, but they did not comment.
