Tesla put driverless Cybercab vehicles on Austin public streets ahead of a planned Thursday event detailing its robotaxi rollout. Tesla deployed its autonomous Cybercab vehicles on public streets in Austin, Texas, ahead of an exclusive launch event scheduled for Thursday. The company offered users of its existing Model Y-based robotaxi fleet an opportunity to attend the Cybercab Launch Event, generating widespread attention across social media and financial markets as the electric vehicle maker pushes deeper into autonomous transportation.
Vehicle Design, Manufacturing, and Production Timelines
The Cybercab is a two-seat vehicle featuring butterfly doors and is Tesla’s first vehicle designed specifically for autonomous operation. Its cabin is stripped of both steering wheel and pedals, though some test vehicles spotted on U.S. roads have featured conventional controls for safety drivers during trials.
Tesla began manufacturing the Cybercab at its Giga Texas facility earlier this year, with Chief Executive Elon Musk cautioning that initial production would follow a slow ramp before accelerating.
Technical hurdles have accompanied the production push. According to reports from Al Volante, the launch of the AI5 chip—originally planned as the core computing brain for the Cybercab—has been delayed to the middle of 2027. Consequently, the first series-production Cybercabs will utilize the current-generation AI4 chip.
Safety Data and Pilot Operations in Texas
As Tesla expands its footprint, pilot testing data submitted to federal regulators paints a complex picture of autonomous reliability. Tesla has operated a test fleet of robotaxis in Austin since June 2025.

Recorded incidents include a collision with a stationary object at 27 kilometers per hour, a bus strike, and a crash involving a truck.
Public records from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles show that Tesla had 45 Cybercab vehicles authorized for driverless operations in Texas out of 420 total vehicles registered in the state for driverless operations as of Wednesday night. A Tesla robotaxi tracker cited by CNBC estimates that roughly 200 vehicles in the company’s U.S. fleet carry an unsupervised designation, operating across cities including Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa.
Regulatory Scrutiny and Competitive Pressures
Federal oversight remains intense. Safety regulators at NHTSA have opened a minimum of two active probes examining whether Tesla’s partially automated driving systems contain safety defects. Furthermore, Tesla has not publicly confirmed whether it has secured the necessary regulatory approvals for commercial Cybercab operations or verified compliance with federal safety standards.

Reporting transparency has also drawn scrutiny. While competitors such as Waymo, Zoox, and Aurora file detailed narratives for every NHTSA incident report, Tesla classifies its incident descriptions as confidential business information.
The competitive landscape differs sharply from Tesla’s camera-only approach. Waymo operates paid robotaxi rides in 14 cities nationwide with approximately 4,000 autonomous vehicles in active service, utilizing a sensor suite combining cameras, radars, and lidars. China’s Baidu operates similar multi-sensor robotaxi services through its Apollo Go project across dozens of cities.
Market Standing and International Expansion Hurdles
Commercial uncertainties weigh on investors as Tesla stock trades down about 21% for the year as of Wednesday’s close. Musk has previously acknowledged that the company needs to accumulate massive amounts of driving data, suggesting a substantial threshold before software is fully prepared for unsupervised deployment across broad regions.
International deployment faces immediate regulatory roadblocks. In Europe, vehicle homologation rules mandate a physical steering wheel and pedals, preventing the unassisted operation of steering-wheel-free vehicles without special regulatory exemptions. Consequently, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving capabilities in European markets remain restricted to Level 2 driver-assistance features requiring continuous human supervision.
