Emergency responders evacuated occupants and rescued pets, while a local chef braved the flames to pull a trapped woman to safety.

Flames tore through the landmark Delphi Greek Taverna on Lilian Ngoyi Road near Livingstone Road in Windermere, destroying the long-standing family-run establishment on the afternoon of September 3. Thick plumes of black smoke billowed into the sky above Durban, remaining visible from as far away as Berea as emergency responders rushed to the scene.
The establishment had served generations of locals and visitors as a cherished culinary fixture in the area, known for its traditional Greek food and homely atmosphere. News of the fire spread quickly, sparking widespread concern across the city given the establishment’s deep-rooted history. David Badenhorst, a member of the lower Morningside Community Policing Forum, noted the profound local impact of the disaster. Friends, neighbours and members of the community gathered at the scene to offer their support and comfort to the family during this extremely difficult ordeal, Badenhorst said, adding that community thoughts remained with the affected family, staff, and everyone affected by the devastating incident.
Emergency Crews Combat Rapid Collapse and Smoke
The eThekwini Fire Department brought the structural fire under control in approximately 20 minutes, deploying three fire engines, a 10,000-litre water carrier, a foam carrier, and a command vehicle to the site. Fire Station Commander Nomathemba Ngcobo detailed the severe hazards crews faced inside the gutted structure.

Firefighters deployed four rescue pumpers and eight breathing apparatus wearers across four hose lines. Ngcobo noted that entering the crumbling building presented extreme danger as debris fell from the top section of the fire, making it a challenge to extinguish the blaze while the building was already showing signs of collapse. The eThekwini Municipality commended the brave men and women of its emergency services for their swift and disciplined response.
Rescue Efforts Save Pets and Evacuate Occupants
Advanced Life Support Paramedics arrived swiftly alongside firefighters to evaluate people evacuated from the property. Garrith Jamieson, spokesperson for ALS Paramedics Medical Services, confirmed that paramedics assessed occupants at the scene, highlighting the emotional impact of the incident on the local community as many people recognise the restaurant that has been open for many years.

While no human fatalities were recorded and no persons were found inside the building after the fire was extinguished, firefighters rescued two dogs trapped inside the burning structure. Tragically, a parrot, which was one of the pets still in the building, died after being rescued.
A Local Chef’s Heroic Rescue
Amid the chaos, an unknown local chef from the Windermere Road vicinity emerged as a good Samaritan in saving lives. Brent Lindeque, founder and editor-in-charge at Good Things Guy, detailed how the culinary worker stepped in when a family faced mortal danger as flames tore through the restaurant.
“He took off his shirt, poured water over himself and ran into a burning building to rescue a woman trapped inside. And then, once she was safe, he just disappeared.”

The swift intervention prevented further tragedy before firefighters fully secured the perimeter. Crews also managed to save the sweet shop located on the ground floor beneath the restaurant.
Traffic Disruptions and Ongoing Safety Investigations
Authorities cordoned off the immediate area around the busy intersection of Lilian Ngoyi and Livingstone roads to allow firefighting crews clear access and ensure public safety, prompting localized road closures and significant traffic delays for commuters and pedestrians. By 18:00, firefighters remained stationed at the restaurant damping down the building to prevent the fire from reigniting.
South African Police Service officers joined municipal fire safety officers at the site. The eThekwini Municipality confirmed that the exact cause of the fire remains undetermined at this stage and will be investigated by fire safety officers and SAPS once the scene is fully secured.
