Lidl is rolling out a direct account-to-account payment option across all 326 of its Czech stores starting this autumn, bypassing traditional card networks to curb transaction fees that cost the country’s top retailers 1,4 miliardy korun in 2022.
Shopping at Lidl stores is undergoing a notable operational shift at the checkout lane. The grocery chain is preparing to implement a payment method that requires neither a physical card nor a physical wallet. Instead, customers will pay directly from their bank accounts using their mobile devices, a technology that company executives expect to generate millions in savings.
The system relies on a domestic account-to-account payment service known as Cvak, which was developed by Air Bank within the PPF group and introduced to the market at the beginning of 2024. Under this setup, funds travel straight from the customer’s bank account to the retailer’s account without involving an intermediary card network. At the register, shoppers authorize the transaction within their mobile banking application after connecting it to the store’s loyalty app.
The High Cost of Interchange Fees Driving Retailers to A2A Payments
Behind the nationwide rollout lies a straightforward economic equation for brick-and-mortar retail operations. Every standard card transaction incurs a toll paid to banks and international card associations, averaging roughly half a percent of the purchase total. While that percentage appears modest on a single transaction, the daily volume across major supermarket chains accumulates into billions of crowns.
According to calculations from the Union of Commerce and Tourism, the seven largest domestic retail chains paid a combined 1,4 miliardy korun in card processing fees during 2022. As sales volumes continue to climb upward, that financial burden expands proportionally, pushing major merchants to seek alternatives.
While Cvak charges a standard rate of 0.8 percent per transaction with no monthly flat fee, large retail partners typically negotiate customized, lower rates. Beyond immediate fee reduction, direct bank payments serve as an independent backup during unexpected technical outages or system failures at major card processing networks.

Expansion Plans and Banking Integration Across the Retail Sector
Lidl is not the first major grocery operator to adopt the technology. Competitor Albert integrated the service into its loyalty application last May, making it the first large retail chain to utilize the platform. However, Albert restricted direct mobile banking payments at checkout primarily to clients of Air Bank and Moneta Money Bank.
Lidl aims for a broader reach by pledging to offer Cvak to every customer regardless of their banking institution, with specific technical details slated for release during the autumn rollout across all 326 locations.

After two years of market operation, the Cvak platform has expanded to more than four thousand direct merchants, while an additional sixteen thousand online stores have adopted the system through the Comgate payment gateway. The network currently processes roughly a quarter of a million transactions every month.
Regulatory Tailwinds and Consumer Choice at Checkout
The push toward direct account-to-account transactions aligns with broader regulatory shifts in the financial sector. The Czech National Bank launched the National Payments Forum platform in mid-June to establish unified standards for payment QR codes, viewing instant transfers as a serious future rival to established multinational card systems.

Despite the introduction of the new infrastructure, traditional payment methods remain fully intact. Shoppers who prefer conventional plastic cards, cash, or digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay face no mandatory changes. The direct bank transfer option operates entirely as a voluntary choice that customers can activate or deactivate within their mobile phones at their discretion.
Payment Methods and Fee Structures Across Prediction Markets
In a related financial ecosystem, transaction mechanics and deposit structures vary significantly across digital platforms. Popular forecasting platforms such as the Kalshi and Polymarket app enforce a $10 minimum deposit across all accepted funding options, distinguishing themselves from traditional sportsbooks and daily fantasy sports providers.

While online bank transfers, wire transfers, and cryptocurrency transactions operate without platform fees—though wire transfers carry a minimum threshold of $1,000 on Kalshi and $5,000 on Polymarket—other methods incur direct charges. Kalshi applies a 2 percent deposit fee for debit cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, and Venmo. Competitors such as Novig charge a 3 percent debit card and Apple Pay fee, whereas Polymarket, DraftKings Predictions, and FanDuel Predicts generally process debit cards and Apple Pay without platform charges.
Upcoming Social Security Disbursement Timelines
Meanwhile, government benefit administrators are preparing for upcoming payment cycles affecting millions of recipients. Approximately 75 million Americans receive disbursements through the Social Security Administration, with retirees making up more than 59 million of that total alongside disabled individuals and young beneficiaries.

Beneficiaries currently receive an average Social Security payment of $2,082, while Supplemental Security Income recipients average $737, with a federal maximum set at $994 for individuals and $1,491 for couples. Because September 1 falls on a Tuesday, SSI payments will be distributed on their regular schedule at the beginning of the month.
Traditional Social Security retirement checks will follow standard birthdate-based distribution tiers on Wednesdays throughout the month. Payments are scheduled for September 9 for those born between the first and tenth of the month, September 16 for birthdays falling between the eleventh and twentieth, and September 23 for individuals born from the twenty-first through the thirty-first.
