Chinese recovery teams using excavators, shovels, and ground-penetrating radar scoured the mud-buried ruins at the Gyirong border crossing, where a five-storey customs building once stood before a tsunami-like wave of water and debris obliterated the site.
The resulting rockfall sent a massive surge of ice, rock, and meltwater crashing into the Lhende River, touching off debris flows that swept away downstream villages, bridges, and hydropower facilities.
Human Toll, Missing Pilgrims, and Recovery Operations
The catastrophe has claimed more than 1,280 lives in Nepal alone, while official tallies on the Chinese side recorded 43 dead. More than 5,000 people remain unaccounted for across both countries.

Among the missing are hundreds of foreign nationals who traveled to the region for religious pilgrimage or work. Government officials confirmed that the missing included 484 tourists, comprising 391 foreigners and 93 Nepalis. Pilgrims headed to Mount Kailash in Tibet accounted for a significant share, including 133 Indian citizens, alongside 47 Americans, 34 Australians, 33 Britons, and 24 Canadians.
Recovery teams face daunting conditions in remote mountain valleys where roads have vanished. In Nepal’s Rasuwa district, helicopters hovered overhead to bring in survivors, while police recorded the names of missing persons outside a military barracks gate using mobile phone flashlights because damaged hydropower infrastructure left the area without electricity.
Crews faced challenging conditions as they searched unstable terrain and piles of debris, which raised fears the death toll could rise as rescuers reach isolated communities.
On the Chinese side, recovery workers collected personal items and recorded unique physical identifiers from recovered remains. Officials noted that teams were taking fingerprints and tattoos from bodies while retrieving hundreds of personal effects from the mud.
Geopolitical Pressures and Economic Fallout
The destruction of the Gyirong crossing—known on the Nepali side as Kerung—strikes a severe blow to regional trade and trade diversification. Successive Nepali governments had invested heavily in upgrading Kerung into an all-weather international route to reduce the country’s economic vulnerability to India, which had imposed blockades in 1969 and 2015.
With Gyirong erased and neighboring Tatopani closed due to landslide risks, trade has been funneled to Korala, a third crossing lacking adequate commercial infrastructure. Preliminary estimates place economic losses at $2.56 billion. Analysts note that the disaster will deepen Nepal’s economic reliance on New Delhi, especially as floods knocked out roughly 10 percent of domestic electricity-generation capacity and forced Kathmandu to rely on Indian ports to import vital supplies.

Diplomatic friction has also emerged. Representatives from several foreign governments privately expressed frustration with Beijing over limited information-sharing regarding DNA identification protocols and facial-recognition footage. Meanwhile, Chinese officials emphasized that the origin of the disaster required broader international collaboration.

Earth scientists warn that such disasters are becoming an escalating hazard across the Himalayan range.
