Isar Aerospace successfully placed five satellites into orbit on September 5, 2026, launching its Spectrum rocket from Andøya, Norway. The flight marks the first time a private European commercial company has delivered payloads to orbit from continental Europe, challenging American dominance in the launch market.
The flight lifted off at 22:12 from the Andøya spaceport located north of the Arctic Circle, according to Les Echos. Designated as mission Onward and Upward, the 28-tonne vehicle reached the Kármán line at an altitude of about 100 kilometers roughly four minutes into flight before deploying its payloads into Earth orbit taz.de.

Complementing Ariane and Scaling Production
Spectrum does not replace heavy-lift systems operated by Arianespace from Kourou, French Guiana 20 Minutes. Instead, the vehicle fills a lighter payload category designed to complement Ariane 6 and Vega ladepeche.fr. Officials estimate Spectrum’s capacity at roughly one ton, operating alongside Vega C’s 3.3-ton capacity and Ariane 6’s 21.6-ton capacity ladepeche.fr.
The payloads carried on the successful flight were selected through the German space agency DLR’s Microlauncher Competition, a program backed by the European Space Agency’s Boost! initiative to give educational institutions and start-ups affordable access to orbit ladepeche.fr. Manufacturing Expansion and Future Timelines
With a successful orbital flight completed, Munich-based Isar Aerospace aims to transition toward industrial-scale manufacturing.
