Capcom to Revive Dormant IPs After Onimusha: Way of the Sword Success

Capcom confirmed plans to revive dormant intellectual properties following the successful launch of Onimusha: Way of the Sword. The action title sold over one million copies worldwide on its September 4 release day, prompting the publisher to lean deeper into its extensive back catalog for future projects.

Onimusha Leads a Broader Push Into Dormant Franchises

The publisher announced the sales milestone for its Edo-era action game Way of the Sword via social feeds and an official press release. The title casts players as Miyamoto Musashi in Kyoto and marks the first mainline entry in the Onimusha series in more than two decades. Pre-release demos and hands-on showcases helped build awareness among a broad range of players ahead of the rollout across Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

That strong market performance pushed the overall Onimusha franchise past 10 million lifetime units since its 2001 debut. Building on that momentum, the company signaled that it intends to dig further into its archives. According to the publisher’s official press release, the strategy goes beyond standard annual releases.

The company added that it aims to further maximize corporate value by drawing on its back catalog. While this focus gained fresh attention following Onimusha’s breakout performance, the approach is not entirely new.

A Long-Term Strategy Rooted in Investor Disclosures

Unlocking value from older intellectual property has been part of the publisher’s long-term planning for years. The company raised the concept with investors as far back as 2019. The company later used almost identical phrasing in a December 2024 investor release tied to upcoming game reveals.

Alongside the Onimusha relaunch, the publisher scheduled Mega Man: Dual Override for 2027 and prepared a sequel for Okami.

Fan Expectations and the Wishlist for Future Revivals

While none of these potential comebacks are guaranteed, the publisher’s library offers plenty of options.
