Thousands of participants and multiple floats had paraded through the streets of the French capital on Saturday, September 5, in a grand Hindu religious procession. The movement also staged a cultural boat procession on the Seine. The high-profile gatherings coincided with the consecration of the organization’s first major temple built in France, located in Bussy-Saint-Georges in Seine-et-Marne, roughly 30 kilometers east of Paris.
While the religious group celebrated its new sanctuary, its private tour of the capital’s signature monument crossed a red line for local labor groups. The movement has faced criticism from portions of the Indian diaspora who characterize its practices as particularly conservative and nationalist. When the delegation toured the monument, the insistence on segregating staff based on gender triggered immediate institutional friction.
Management Concedes Restrictions Should Have Been Rejected
Faced with mounting pressure from staff unions, the Société d’exploitation de la tour Eiffel acknowledged that the visiting delegation explicitly requested a tour that limited interactions with women. The operating company admitted that these restrictive conditions should never have been accommodated.
As the strike paralyzed operations throughout Monday, the monument’s official website displayed a brief banner citing a delayed opening due to operational reasons. Behind the scenes, emergency talks began between management and worker representatives to resolve the labor dispute.
A personnel representative confirmed that discussions yielded an agreement to normalize operations, setting the stage for the tower to reopen to the public on Tuesday morning. Yet the administrative fallout continued to expand as leadership pledged to investigate how the arrangements were permitted in the first place.
Political Backlash Across the French Class
The incident ignited immediate condemnation across the French political spectrum, with leaders uniting to defend republican principles of equality. Emmanuel Grégoire, the Socialist mayor of Paris, declared the demands unacceptable on social media.
Grégoire added that equality applies to every corner of the city and confirmed that an official inquiry would be launched promptly. Ariel Weil, president of the operating company and mayor of Paris Centre, stated that neither he nor the mayor had received advance notice of the private visit. We are going to shed light on what happened and we will draw the consequences, Weil noted, emphasizing that cultural motives cannot justify discriminatory practices.
Other regional and national leaders joined the chorus of disapproval. Valérie Pécresse, president of the Île-de-France region, stated that she personally informed BAPS representatives in France that such practices contradict republican laws. Aurore Bergé, the minister for gender equality and the fight against discrimination, asserted that no dogma or religion supersedes national law.

Manuel Bompard of La France Insoumise called the situation completely unacceptable, while conservative figures such as Bruno Retailleau criticized any submission to foreign visitor demands.
