Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with his Somali counterpart in Cairo during the 166th session of the Arab League Council, praising bilateral ties and warning against any unilateral actions that compromise Somalia’s sovereignty, while regional developments were also discussed in a separate call with Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister.
Cairo Talks Focus on Somali Sovereignty and Regional Security
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with Somali Foreign Minister Abdusalam Abdi Ali in Cairo on the sidelines of the 166th session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level. During their discussions, Abdelatty offered praise for the significant development in bilateral relations between Cairo and Mogadishu. He issued a direct warning against any unilateral measures that could compromise or diminish the nation’s sovereignty. Reaffirming Cairo’s diplomatic posture, the Egyptian minister stressed Egypt’s full support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia, alongside the preservation of its core national institutions.
Beyond political backing, the bilateral talks outlined a shared commitment to advancing economic, developmental, and investment ties. Abdelatty also emphasized the necessity of cooperating with international partners to secure sustainable funding for the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia, pointing to Egypt’s direct participation in the force. He confirmed that Cairo remains dedicated to supporting the capacity-building efforts of Somali state institutions.
Cairo Seeks Release of Detained Egyptian Sailors
Amid the high-level diplomatic exchanges, the Egyptian delegation raised a pressing humanitarian and consular concern. Abdelatty formally requested that Somali authorities exert all possible efforts to expedite the release of Egyptian sailors detained off the coast of Somalia and ensure their safety. He called for the continued involvement of the Somali government in the ongoing crisis to secure the captives’ freedom.
Riyadh Phone Call Extends Regional Coordination
The diplomatic push extended beyond the Arab League sessions in Cairo. Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Faisal bin Farhan received a phone call from Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Dr. Badr Abdelatty. The two ministers utilized the call to review the latest developments across the region and evaluate ongoing efforts aimed at enhancing regional security and stability.
