Flights across major British airports faced significant disruption on Tuesday after a technical fault affected air traffic control provider NATS. The incident impacted the organisation’s flight data processing system, which handles flight plans and operational information utilized by air controllers to maintain a safe and orderly flow of traffic in UK airspace.
Widespread Flight Disruptions Hit Major UK Airports Following NATS Technical Fault
According to Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, the technical difficulty initially affected departures before spreading to arrivals as ground space grew restricted and aircraft across Europe ended up out of position. Data gathered by the flight-tracking platform FlightAware showed that approximately 490 departures were delayed at six major airports—including Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, Luton, Edinburgh, and Bristol—as of 1518 GMT, while roughly 525 arrivals at those same facilities faced cancellations or delays.
At Heathrow Airport, aviation analytics company Cirium reported that 38 out of 661 scheduled arrivals were cancelled or unable to operate. British Airways emerged as the most affected carrier at the hub, cancelling 16 of its 333 scheduled departures. Additional disruption rippled across other hubs, with facilities such as Manchester, Stansted, East Midlands, Birmingham, and Belfast City reporting varying degrees of impact on their flight schedules.
NATS Resolves System Issue as Backlogs Persist
NATS confirmed that it implemented a fix for the flight processing system and later announced that the issue was fully resolved, with operations returning to normal according to statements issued by the provider. Despite the technical fix, industry officials warned that recovery would take time.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander noted on X that resuming normal schedules would require patience, advising travelers to continue checking flight statuses directly with their airlines. Aviation analyst John Strickland explained that even a brief interruption in Europe’s tightly timed airspace can generate massive disruptions as delays cascade through complex airline schedules.
Airlines Demand Leadership Changes and Urgent Reforms
The latest incident reignited sharp criticism from major carriers regarding the reliability of Britain’s aviation infrastructure. Ryanair reported that more than 65,000 of its passengers experienced delays lasting up to eight hours, alongside the cancellation of over 50 flights. Ryanair Chief Operating Officer Neal McMahon strongly criticized NATS leadership, calling on Chief Executive Martin Rolfe to resign over recurring operational failures.
Wizz Air likewise demanded an urgent overhaul of the air traffic controller, stating that the organization was not fit for purpose and that airlines, passengers, and airports should not continuously bear the financial consequences of system crashes. Airline executives noted that previous major technical outages had already cost carriers upwards of £100 million in refunds and passenger compensation.
Regulators Scrutinize UK Aviation Resilience
The UK Civil Aviation Authority announced it would require NATS to submit a comprehensive report detailing Tuesday’s incident. Regulators indicated they will consider whether additional steps are necessary to secure the long-term reliability of the nation’s air traffic control network.

Tuesday’s disruption follows a series of high-profile technical failures in recent years, including a July incident involving a radar-related issue and a prior flight-plan processing malfunction that prompted the aviation regulator to order reviews of NATS contingency planning.
