Days after a mistrial was declared in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, her former husband Patrick Clancy issued a sharp warning to online commentators, threatening legal action over what his legal representation described as a relentless defamation campaign. According to a statement released on Tuesday, September 8, by his attorney Howard Cooper, Patrick Clancy and his family have been targeted by minor celebrities, social media influencers, and conspiracy theorists spreading blatant and baseless falsehoods
alleging his involvement in the deaths of his children.
Patrick Clancy Threatens Legal Action Over Defamation and Online Conspiracies
The online speculation intensified while the high-profile court proceedings played out over the summer. Lindsay Clancy admitted to killing the couple’s three young children—5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan—at their Duxbury, Massachusetts home in January 2023. During the trial, her defense argued she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and was not criminally responsible for the acts. Prosecutors argued instead that she was fully aware of her actions before attempting suicide by jumping from a second-story window. Patrick Clancy, 36, testified as the prosecution’s first witness and stated during the proceedings that he forgave his former wife.
Real-Life Threats and Law Enforcement Involvement
Despite Patrick Clancy never being arrested or named a suspect by authorities, unverified theories continued to circulate across platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Cooper’s statement emphasized that the misinformation campaign remains at a fever pitch and has resulted in real life threats to his reputation, livelihood, and life.
Law enforcement has been notified regarding the harassment, and Cooper indicated that every appropriate measure, including civil litigation, will be pursued to establish accountability.
CBS News legal analyst Caroline Polisi characterized the attorney’s public notice as functioning similarly to a cease-and-desist letter, signaling that formal civil lawsuits could follow if the online behavior persists. Meanwhile, Plymouth District Attorney Tim Cruz has not yet announced whether prosecutors will pursue a second trial following the deadlocked jury’s failure to reach a unanimous verdict, which resulted in a mistrial declared on Friday, September 4.

Following the mistrial, Lindsay Clancy’s defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, addressed reporters outside the Plymouth courthouse. While Reddington distanced himself from the conspiracy theories during a subsequent interview on Good Morning America, he earlier remarked to media outlets that internet investigators on social media platforms actively examine case details. Reddington also pointed to the emotional 911 call placed by Patrick Clancy following the tragedy, noting that the recording demonstrated the anguish and credibility of his former client’s ex-husband.
