iPhone Duo Costs More in Canada Due to Market Strategy, Not Tariffs

Apple’s new foldable iPhone Duo starts at $2,999 CAD in Canada, outpacing its U.S. base price of $1,999 US. Economists point to market pricing strategies and strong demand rather than trade tariffs, while Apple offers zero-percent financing options to help buyers manage the steep costs.

Canadian Pricing and the Sticker Shock of Apple’s New Foldable Phone

Canadians are accustomed to paying a premium for imported consumer electronics compared to buyers south of the border, but the launch of Apple’s newest flagship device has pushed that price gap to levels that caused some double takes according to the CBC report. The iPhone Duo, Apple’s new foldable phone revealed Wednesday, retails in Canada for prices ranging from $2,999 to $4,799 before tax. By comparison, U.S. prices for the device start at $1,999 US, which converts to approximately $2,760 CAD. That leaves Canadian consumers paying nearly 10 per cent more for the entry-level tier.

The pricing strategy immediately drew widespread reaction on social media. A Canadian Reddit forum filled with jeers and jokes about the device, with one user remarking that anyone spending that much on a phone should take a financial literacy class. Another participant posted, You used to be able to buy a car for that amount, capturing the disbelief surrounding the launch.

Alongside the foldable Duo, Apple also introduced traditional flagship models that do not fold. Pricing for the standard iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,749 CAD, while the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,899 CAD before taxes. Across storage tiers, the Pro Max costs an additional $150 compared to its standard sibling.

Economic Factors Behind the Price Gap: Tariffs vs. Market Segmentation

As consumers looked for reasons behind the elevated Canadian price tag, some industry observers pointed toward ongoing trade friction. However, trade experts consulted by reporters clarified that tariffs are not driving the markup. While Canada implemented retaliatory counter-tariffs on U.S. goods—including a 50 per cent tariff rate on smartphones—economists explain that the policy misses the mark for Apple’s supply chain.

Canada does not import smartphones from the United States in any meaningful quantity, and the devices originate from manufacturing hubs in China. Because the phones are built in China and are therefore treated as a product originating in China and not the U.S., they bypass the counter-tariffs entirely.

Instead, experts trace the price discrepancy to market dynamics and component costs. University of Toronto economics professor Joseph Steinberg noted that Apple likely identified a distinct Canadian demographic willing to absorb higher costs for high-end technology. He says the price bump likely signals that Apple recognized the subset of the Canadian population that would buy a super-premium product like the Duo is less price sensitive relative to American consumers, and therefore they can get away with jacking up the margin a little bit more. He notes that it’s not unusual for electronics and other products to be more expensive in Canada, adding, This one just stands out because of how darn expensive this phone is, I think, more than anything.

Werner Antweiler, chair in international trade policy at the University of British Columbia, noted that Price discrimination is not unusual, and that can be in the magnitude of 10 to 15 per cent, because that is typically what the Canadian market will pay more, adding that’s largely because Canada is a smaller market than the U.S.

Antweiler added that global manufacturing pressures also play a significant role. The widespread microchip shortage—fueled by intense artificial intelligence development and rapid expansion of data centers—has generated a “crazy demand” and driven up manufacturing prices across the tech sector.

Financing Options and Upcoming Availability Deadlines

To soften the blow of these figures, Apple is offering 0% APR financing over 24 months in Canada for the entire lineup, covering the iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Managed through Affirm, the program allows buyers to select a two-year term at 0% APR for iPhone purchases without adding interest charges to the total purchase price, though applicable shipping fees and taxes must be paid upfront.
