A smash-and-grab suspect was arrested in Langa six days after attacking a 53-year-old motorist on Jakes Gerwel Drive. The motorist, Rudi van den Bergh, was stabbed three times during the September 3, 2026 incident before fighting back and dragging the attacker along his vehicle.
The Violent Traffic Light Confrontation on Jakes Gerwel Drive
A routine afternoon commute turned into a bloody struggle when Rudi van den Bergh stopped at a red traffic light on Jakes Gerwel Drive. The 53-year-old Edgemead resident was caught in peak afternoon traffic at the intersection with Jakkalsvlei Avenue, where motorists have previously been targeted, when a suspect struck the passenger-side window using a spark plug.
The assailant demanded a cell phone. When Van den Bergh refused, the confrontation quickly escalated into armed violence. The suspect produced a knife and began stabbing toward him.

Raising his arm instinctively to protect himself, Van den Bergh sustained three stab wounds to his left arm and hand. Refusing to surrender, he instinctively drove over a pavement to escape. The attacker remained partially hanging onto the vehicle, getting dragged along before finally falling away, allowing Van den Bergh to drive himself to the hospital for treatment.
Joint Investigation Leads to an Early Morning Arrest in Langa
A case was registered at Bishop Lavis SAPS following the attack. In the days after the incident, officers used CCTV footage from the Thursday 3 September 2026 attack to identify the suspect and trace him to Langa.
City investigators and the South African Police Service tracked the man down, executing an arrest at approximately 5am on Wednesday. Authorities also recovered a knife believed to have been used in the attack.

The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court on Friday, September 11, facing charges of attempted robbery, malicious damage to property, and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
A Notorious Corridor Plagued by Rising Smash-and-Grab Incidents
The dangerous intersection at Jakes Gerwel Drive and Jakkalsvlei Avenue carries a grim history. The corridor has seen multiple violent robberies, including an incident in April earlier this year when an alleged smash-and-grabber was shot and killed by a motorist. Local representatives, including Bonteheuwel councillor Angus McKenzie—who has previously acknowledged the presence of smash-and-grab syndicates operating in the area—and City councillor and FF Plus member Emre Uygun—who has described the perpetrators targeting motorists along the stretch as extremely dangerous—have repeatedly warned about the threats.
The same location was the scene of the fatal December 2025 attack on retired teacher Karin van Aardt, who was stabbed to death during a smash-and-grab attack. Three suspects, Ndiyabulela Vayi, Thando Nkolongo, and Yamnkela Mdunyelwa, were subsequently arrested in connection with her murder, with court proceedings previously hearing that suspects had concealed themselves in long grass beside Jakes Gerwel Drive before targeting the vehicle carrying Van Aardt and her husband, using a spark plug to break the passenger window while another suspect stabbed her.
Following the latest arrest, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith urged victims to come forward and emphasized the need for active community involvement along the corridor.
“It is my sincere hope that there can be a swift prosecution in this case, smash and grabbers operate with impunity and often get away with their crimes as incidents are not reported. I also want to ask the communities along this particular corridor to speak out against these criminals – someone knows who they are.”
