The BBC has confirmed it is dropping RuPaul’s Drag Race UK after eight seasons due to significant financial pressures, with future runs of the competition and its spin-offs moving exclusively to the World of Wonder streaming platform WOW Presents Plus starting with an autumn 2027 premiere for All Stars.
The cultural footprint of British drag television is shifting off public service broadcasting. After eight main series and multiple international iterations, the groundbreaking reality competition is departing its longtime television home.
The eighth series of the main programme launched on BBC Three and BBC iPlayer, and the broadcaster confirmed that the current run will continue to broadcast as normal while all existing seasons remain available on iPlayer. Once the transition is finalized, future series and the international all-star spin-off RuPaul’s Drag Race UK vs The World will broadcast on WOW Presents Plus, the streaming service operated by the show’s production company, World of Wonder. Additionally, previous fan favorites will return for RuPaul’s Drag Race UK All Stars, which is slated to premiere in autumn 2027 on the same platform.
Financial Pressures and Broadcaster Realities
The move comes as the corporation works to navigate major fiscal hurdles.
A BBC spokesperson stated via Radio Times that as the BBC continued to navigate significant financial pressures and deliver the savings required of them, they had been forced to make some very difficult choices, none of which had been taken lightly, and therefore confirmed together with World of Wonder that RuPaul’s Drag Race UK would be leaving the BBC and moving to WOW Presents Plus.
The broadcaster added that it remains incredibly proud of all eleven series of the franchise, which includes both the main competition and its international spin-offs, expressing gratitude to RuPaul, World of Wonder, and everyone involved on and off screen.
This decision follows a broader pattern of cutbacks at the network regarding LGBTQ+ focused programming. Earlier in the year, the BBC dropped the groundbreaking dating show I Kissed a Boy—which made history as the UK’s first gay dating show—alongside its companion series I Kissed a Girl. At the time of those cancellations, the corporation cited similar funding challenges and stated there were no current plans for the show to return, despite executive pride in the format.
Community Representation and Mainstream Accessibility Stakes
Since launching in 2019, the show has helped bring British drag into mainstream entertainment, turning performers such as La Voix, Danny Beard, Baga Chipz, the late The Vivienne, and series two versus The World winner Tia Kofi into household names. The panel of judges has featured RuPaul alongside Michelle Visage, Graham Norton, and Alan Carr, accompanied by high-profile celebrity guests.
However, the exit from a free-to-air public broadcaster to a subscription streaming service has sparked sharp criticism from performers and viewers regarding visibility.
Alex Re, a fan, expressed via BBC News that for that young queer kid sitting at home wanting a community and something to relate to, that content was now hidden behind a paywall.
Tia Kofi argued that dropping the programme ignores the dedicated viewership tuning into niche content. Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, the performer noted that cutting the series removes a vital mainstream platform for marginalized artists who lack alternative spaces in the UK media landscape.
Elle Vosque, last year’s runner-up, noted via BBC Newsbeat that someone could be flicking through the BBC, stumble upon the show, and end up loving it even though it was completely unfamiliar to anything they had been exposed to before, which they believed was the biggest downside.
While the franchise transitions to subscription-only viewing, the BBC maintains that it continues to represent the LGBTQ+ community through various scripted and unscripted storylines across its network, pointing to titles such as Mr Loverman, Rob & Rylan’s Grand Tour, Amandaland, EastEnders, What It Feels Like For a Girl, The Dickie Show, Vigil, Smoggie Queens, Such Brave Girls, and Juice.

The structural shift of the UK edition highlights the volatile economics of reality television franchises operating under public funding constraints. While World of Wonder secures a dedicated home for its intellectual property on its proprietary platform, the departure severs a five-year tradition of mainstream accessibility that introduced regional drag artistry to casual television viewers across Britain.
Questions remain regarding how international adaptations of the format will be handled moving forward. The BBC declined to comment on whether future series of other international versions, including Drag Race Canada and Drag Race Down Under, will continue to air on its platforms, leaving the long-term presence of the broader global franchise within the UK public service ecosystem entirely unconfirmed.
