Two local tourists died on September 12, 2026, when a hired boat carrying seven people capsized off the Nyali coast in Mombasa after returning from Fort Jesus. Strong sea waves overwhelmed the vessel, prompting a multi-agency rescue effort that saved three tourists and the captain while leaving families devastated.
What was meant to be a smooth holiday outing turned into tragedy on a Saturday afternoon along the Kenyan coast. Five members of a family visiting from Western Kenya had spent their day touring Fort Jesus, one of Mombasa’s most popular landmarks. They rented a boat for the trip, but disaster struck on the journey back as the family returned from a trip to Fort Jesus.
The Capsizing and Rescue Operations off Nyali Coast
The vessel departed for Fort Jesus at approximately 1:30 pm and capsized around 2:45 pm as it encountered heavy sea turbulence. According to police reports, the craft was carrying two crew members and five local tourists when it was struck by powerful waves while returning from Fort Jesus.
One survivor managed to swim to the shore and raised the alarm at Kijani Beach, triggering an immediate response. A multi-agency team composed of the Kenya Coast Guard, Kenya Navy, Kenya Police Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, and local citizens mobilized to search the water comprising officers from the Kenya Coast Guard, Kenya Navy, Kenya Police Service, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and members of the public. The captain and three tourists were rescued and admitted to Coast General Hospital in stable condition. The capsized hull was eventually towed to Jumeirah Beach.
Survivor Accounts of the Sudden Overturn
Kethy Baraza, one of the family survivors, described how quickly the placid outing deteriorated into a struggle for survival when the waves hit the channel entrance. Her siblings, Ken Barasa, 38, and Cynthia Barasa, 33, did not survive the sinking; their bodies washed ashore the following day a few meters from the wreck site at the shores of the ocean, a few metres from where the boat capsized.
We were going to Fort Jesus, and everything went well. We had a very good time. However, as we were returning, there were waves at the entrance, and that is when they overwhelmed the boat and caused it to turn over.

Kethy recounted the frantic final moments in the water, noting how her sister panicked and became impossible to support against the current She slipped away and we lost her. My brother’s wife also came towards me, and I told her, ‘Get on my back.’ She held onto me, and I told her to hold on tightly until the end.
Operator Warnings and Erratic Weather Patterns
Boat operators pointed to rapidly shifting atmospheric conditions along the coastline as a key factor in the disaster. Volca Dunga, a boat operator, noted that storm clouds gathered quickly following a night of heavy rain Clouds indicating rain started gathering, and that was a sign that we needed to be cautious. I told my fellow captains that we should start heading back to Mombasa Beach. I used the same route through which I had entered, but unfortunately, the waves overwhelmed me.
Official Responses and Calls for Maritime Safety Inspections
In the wake of the tragedy, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir addressed the public, urging maritime officials to tighten oversight and inspect vessels operating along the coast calling on maritime authorities to inspect the affected area. The governor pointed out that current weather patterns demand extreme caution from anyone utilizing coastal beaches.
We are asking everyone right now. The season is here, and we are experiencing very erratic weather changes. So, we have very safe areas where people can go instead of using Mombasa Beach.
