Global oceans have endured 100 consecutive days of record average heat, driven by human-caused climate change and intensified by severe El Niño conditions. Recorded by scientific organisations including NOAA and the European Union’s Copernicus service, the prolonged warming is disrupting marine ecosystems, accelerating global sea temperatures, and threatening coastal economies.

What began as a steady climb in early June has transformed into an unbroken meteorological milestone. While the planet has experienced multi-day temperature streaks before, ocean surface temperatures have remained at record levels since June 2.

On Wednesday, the average ocean temperature stood at 21.17C, sitting 0.79C above the 1991–2020 average and 0.95C above the 1982–2010 average. Two major datasets capture the apex of these readings: the European Union’s Copernicus ocean monitoring service recorded 21.10C on August 22 using its ERA5 dataset, while Climate Reanalyzer at the University of Maine registered 21.24C on August 23 using NOAA’s OISST dataset.

Tracking the Heat: How Scientists Measure Ocean Temperatures

Behind these figures lies a massive global observing network. Historically, taking the temperature of the sea required research ships to dangle sensors or water sample collectors overboard, yielding sparse snapshots of vast water bodies. Today, scientists rely on a combination of satellites measuring sea surface height—since warming water physically expands—and thousands of automated instruments distributed across the globe.

Among the most critical tools are a fleet of more than 3,000 robotic profiling floats known as Argo floats, which drift at varying depths, periodically ascending to record temperature and salinity profiles before transmitting their location via satellite. Researchers constantly cross-reference these readings with data from conductivity-temperature-depth instruments, expendable bathythermographs, and even marine mammals like seals fitted with instruments to reach otherwise inaccessible areas.

The pace at which the oceans are accumulating this thermal energy is staggering. According to historical comparisons, the rate of ocean warming doubled between the periods 1960–2005 and 2005–2025. Scientists emphasize that greenhouse gas emissions are the primary driver, with oceans absorbing more than 90 percent of the excess heat trapped in the Earth system by human-caused global warming.

Deepening Fevers and Severe Weather Drivers

This accumulation is not confined to surface layers. Reference temperatures are typically measured down to a depth of 200 metres, but thermal energy is penetrating much deeper into the water column. In 2025—marked as the third-hottest year on record—global oceans absorbed another 23 zettajoules of heat. That energy load is equivalent to 12 Hiroshima atomic bombs exploding every second for a year, according to research led by Lijing Cheng at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Severe El Niño conditions are currently compounding these thermal loads. Marine experts note that the ongoing El Niño is particularly severe, amplifying human-driven climate warming across large ocean basins, though regional hotspots like the North Pacific and the Mediterranean are also experiencing extreme temperatures. Mediterranean waters recently spiked to 3.2C above seasonal averages, while the Gulf of Mexico has continued breaking records.

Studies published in March 2025 reveal that nearly half of all marine heatwaves since 2000 would not have occurred without anthropogenic climate change, which makes these events significantly longer and more intense. During the first half of 2026, an estimated 82 percent of the world’s oceans experienced a marine heatwave.

Upending Marine Ecosystems From Britain to the Pacific

The ecological consequences of these sustained high temperatures are rippling across marine food webs. Along the UK’s southwest coast, a marine heatwave raised water temperatures up to 9 degrees F above normal in Devon and Cornwall, triggering an octopus bloom. Common octopus larvae hitchhiked across the English Channel attached to plankton, resulting in octopus landings roughly 7,700 percent higher than usual in 2025.

While the invasion has benefited local fishers targeting the lucrative European export market and boosted populations of predators like seals, conger eels, and dolphins, it has severely cut into catches of scallops, lobster, and crab. The warmth has also drawn bluefin tuna and sharks to British waters for the first time in decades.

Unlike previous surges where returning cold water killed off drifted marine species, current conditions are allowing species like the common octopus to reproduce rather than perish. Similar disruptions are playing out globally, driving fish into deeper, colder layers, triggering coral bleaching, fueling algal blooms, and causing massive seabird die-offs in South America.
