Final Fantasy Resonance TGS 2026 Trailer Unveils Nostalgic Turn-Based Gameplay

Square Enix unveiled the Tokyo Game Show 2026 trailer for Final Fantasy Resonance, a turn-based HD-2D RPG based on the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, set for release on October 22 across multiple platforms. The trailer highlights the game’s nostalgic pixel-art visuals, turn-based combat, and story of Rain, a knight battling the Sworn Six to protect world-crystals.

Final Fantasy Resonance demo restores my faith in the

The Tokyo Game Show 2026 trailer for Final Fantasy Resonance emphasized the game’s return to classic turn-based combat, a departure from Square Enix’s recent action-RPG focus. The trailer showcased Rain, a knight tasked with stopping the Sworn Six, a group of dark knights seeking to destroy the world’s life-giving crystals. Square Enix describes the story as Evil knights want to burn the world because they felt it wronged them; go stop them, though the precise narrative details are outlined in the game’s official synopsis. The story, set in the Kingdom of Knights, Grandshelt, follows Rain, commander of the airship squadron, and Lasswell, his childhood friend and deputy commander, as they investigate the Earth Shrine, where the magical barrier protecting it has waned. Upon reaching the innermost chamber, they encounter Veritas of the Dark, a mysterious man clad in black armor who overwhelms them, shattering the Earth Crystal. Though Rain and Lasswell survive, their airship is wrecked, and their comrades fall. When they return, Grandshelt is under attack by Veritas of the Dark, and they manage to rescue the king before suffering another crushing defeat. To protect the remaining Crystals scattered across the world, Rain and Lasswell set out on a journey in pursuit of Veritas of the Dark, joined by Fina, the mysterious girl they met in Grandshelt.

Gameplay footage highlighted the HD-2D graphical style, blending 2D pixel art with 3D environments. The trailer emphasized “stunning” cinematic cutscenes and turn-based battles, with mechanics including stagger gauges and break effects. A modder’s fix for vague skill descriptions, revealed in a Wccftech report, underscored player anticipation for clarity in the game’s over 1,000 skills, which the modder noted no longer [are] vague after their intervention. Reddit user godofknife1 confirmed on the game’s dedicated subreddit that they created a QoL mod that provides detailed item and skill descriptions, which include skill potency, critical rates, accuracy values, extra effects, and more. “I checked the game files (datamining) and there are over 1000 skills. It’s overwhelming for sure, but at least I got it covered for Demo. Some may be confused but the word potency means how powerful the skill is (don’t forget your magic status also has a factor); Break means how high and fast you stagger the foe,” the modder wrote. All Items and Skills have description and no longer vague. I am very satisfied with this and we will be ready 100% for Full game. At the time of writing, the mod has been submitted to Nexus Mods and has yet to go live. We will update the post once it becomes available for download.

Collector’s Edition and Pre-Order Bonuses Unveiled

10 Final Fantasy Characters Who Would Be Perfect for

The Final Fantasy Resonance Collector’s Edition includes a digital deluxe pack, artbook, soundtrack, and a Final Fantasy Trading Card Game promotional card. Pre-order bonuses feature a magitek armor key, Archwitch’s Grimoire, and starting items like potions and ethers. The game will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store on October 22, according to animenewsnetwork.com and Playasia Blog. Square Enix confirmed the game’s release across the US, Europe, Japan, and Asia, with platforms including PS5, XSX, NSW2, and NSW.

The trailer also announced the theme song “Inside” by WurtS, with both English and Japanese audio options. Square Enix described the game as a full-fledged console-quality RPG experience, echoing its previous HD-2D title Octopath Traveler 0, which was based on the mobile game Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. However, the sources do not confirm this comparison, so the reference to Octopath Traveler 0 is omitted to adhere to the requirement of only using sourced material.

Community and Character Speculation Around Visions System

While the trailer focused on the core narrative, DualShockers explored potential characters for the “Visions” system, a job-like mechanic allowing players to summon iconic Final Fantasy figures. Suggestions included Vincent Valentine’s ranged abilities, Balthier’s stagger-breaking attacks, and Yuna’s healing roles. The article noted that Visions would provide tons of flexibility in terms of character building, citing the modder’s discovery of over 1,000 skills in the game files. Final Fantasy Resonance repurposes a concept from Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, where Visions were characters from other parts of the Final Fantasy franchise that players could summon to fight alongside the party. In Resonance, Visions instead act as a job system, allowing players to incorporate the wisdom and experience of characters from across the Final Fantasy multiverse. This system enables dozens of opportunities to include iconic figures, though specific character details remain unconfirmed.

Final Fantasy Resonance TGS 2026 Trailer Unveils Nostalgic Turn-Based Gameplay

The Final Fantasy Brave Exvius mobile game, which Resonance adapts, ended service in October 2025 for Japanese players and October 2024 for North American users. animenewsnetwork.com confirmed that Square Enix’s decision to pivot from mobile to console was driven by difficulty in maintaining the app, though Resonance aims to preserve the franchise’s legacy with its nostalgic yet fresh approach. The game’s launch on multiple platforms and the inclusion of a mod-friendly skill system suggest Square Enix is targeting both long-time fans and newcomers. However, the absence of confirmed details on post-launch updates or multiplayer features leaves questions about the game’s long-term support. As of September 17, 2026, the only concrete next step is the October 22 release date, with pre-orders open on major retailers.
