macOS 27 Golden Gate Launches With Gemini-Powered Siri AI and New Design

Apple officially released macOS 27 Golden Gate on Sept.

Apple officially released macOS 27 Golden Gate on Sept. 14, bringing a sweeping set of design refinements and feature additions to the Mac platform following months of developer beta testing. While the company focused heavily this year on refining performance and eliminating bugs across its flagship operating system, the update introduces a deeply overhauled Siri experience, smarter productivity tools, and interface adjustments designed to address user feedback from previous releases.

Siri AI Replaces Spotlight and Old Voice Commands

The headline addition to the operating system is the new Siri AI, which is developed in partnership with Google’s Gemini model and takes over for both the old Siri and for Spotlight on supported systems. The interface change unifies local file searches, basic timer commands, complex queries pulling from personal Mac data, and general chatbot questions into a single interaction point. When enabled, the Spotlight interface transforms into a narrower, darker, and more rounded search box.

Siri AI remains in beta and is initially rolling out in English, with availability varying by language and region.

Liquid Glass Adjustments and Interface Cleanups

Apple has also rolled back or refined several controversial visual changes introduced in macOS Tahoe 26. System Settings now features a slider that lets users adjust Liquid Glass transparency from ultra-clear to fully tinted. Appearance settings under Appearance ➝ Liquid Glass allow for contrast improvements, adjusted window shadows, standardized toolbars, and edge-to-edge sidebars.

Visual cleanup extends to menu bar items and system traffic light buttons. Additionally, a new feature automatically hides and expands icons in a crowded menu bar, which proves especially helpful on MacBook laptops featuring a screen notch.

Photos, Safari, and Shortcuts Gain Generative Upgrades

The Photos app receives powerful new editing tools powered by Apple Intelligence. Users can now save a video frame as a still photo by pausing a clip, right-clicking, and choosing Save Video Frame as Photo, adding the image directly to their library without exporting the entire video file.

Advanced editing tools in Photos also include a Reframe feature that changes apparent camera angles using information captured with a compatible photo. Meanwhile, the Clean Up tool now leverages generative AI to handle complex background reconstruction. In Safari, users can organize tabs into groups such as Vacation planning or Work stuff, and use a new Start Page section to resume recently viewed browsing topics.

Automation is similarly simplified via natural language processing. The Shortcuts app now features Describe a Shortcut, allowing users to build complex workflows by simply typing a request in plain English.

Visual Intelligence and Expanded Map Details

Visual Intelligence comes to the Mac with macOS 27 Golden Gate. By pressing Shift-Command-Space, users can select anything on screen and ask Siri to explain it, translate text, search for similar images, or extract details like event flyers directly into the Calendar app.

Shared Albums Storage Trade-Offs and Future Updates

Apple has also outlined additional features arriving in subsequent OS updates, including context-based suggestions in Messages and Mail, automated password updates, and usage limits for AI tools that may vary by feature and system demand.
