Elon Musk Documentary Moves Up U.S. Release Date Amid Legal Threats

Bleecker Street has moved up the theatrical release of Alex Gibney’s documentary Musk to October 9, following strong audience interest at its Venice International Film Festival world premiere. The project faces simultaneous controversy, international distribution uncertainties under Comcast-owned Universal, and active legal threats from the Tesla CEO’s attorney.

Venice Premiere Sparks Release Shift and Critical Acclaim

The documentary chronicling the rise of Elon Musk in right-wing politics is heading to commercial screens a week ahead of schedule. Originally slated for an October 16 arrival, the film will now hit theaters on October 9 following a world premiere at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival on September 8.

The feature carries a runtime of 3 hours and 45 minutes, complete with a 10-minute intermission. Following its initial rollout in New York and Los Angeles, the distributor plans a nationwide theatrical release.

Directed by Alex Gibney, the film examines Musk’s business career, influence, and growing involvement in US politics. The documentary features exclusive interviews with several notable figures, including Ashley St. Clair, the Tesla owner’s former partner and the mother of one of his children. The project also incorporates appearances from Musk’s first ex-wife, Justine Musk, journalists Kara Swisher and Zoë Schiffer, engineers Martin Eberhard, and Godfather of AI Geoffrey Hinton.

Despite drawing a lengthy standing ovation during its festival debut and holding a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, the documentary has encountered intense friction from its primary subject and its international distributor.

Legal Threats and Universal’s Unresolved International Plans

Musk responded to the documentary with sharp criticism on social media, describing the filmmaker in a recent X post as a “horrible human” and a bitter old man who lost the plot long ago. He further characterized the project as a hit piece that misses and described it as “boring af.”

Alongside public denunciations, legal pressure has mounted. Attorney Alex Spiro sent a formal letter to Gibney’s production company, Jigsaw Productions, on behalf of the billionaire, writing, You are … on notice, before release, that the insinuation is false, that the material refuting it is public, and that you chose not to be told the rest.

Director Alex Gibney defended the production’s outreach efforts in response to the legal warnings, stating, I reached out immediately… But he clearly wasn’t interested in talking. We made so many formal outreaches to him, and with the exception of his remarks on Twitter, we received nothing back.

Meanwhile, according to The Hollywood Reporter citing two people familiar with the matter, the film’s international distribution status remains uncertain. Comcast-owned Universal acquired distribution rights to the film outside North America for a significant sum, but the studio has yet to set a release date or communicate its plans to the filmmaking team.

Two people familiar with the situation believe Universal may ultimately decide not to release the documentary because of its political sensitivity and the current dynamics surrounding the Trump administration, raising questions about whether Universal will ultimately release the film abroad.

Diverging Paths for Streaming and Production Backing

While Universal weighs its international options amid pressure from Musk’s legal representation, the project’s domestic television and streaming partner has maintained firm support.

HBO secured North American television and streaming rights to the documentary in 2023. Unlike its studio counterpart, the network has continued supporting the project by providing additional financing and encouraging further filming after Musk became involved in the Trump administration.

Musk led the Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE, during the early months of President Donald Trump’s second administration, where the initiative pursued reductions in federal jobs, contracts and government spending. That political trajectory forms a core element of Gibney’s examination, leaving the project caught between critical acclaim, high-stakes legal scrutiny, and cautious corporate distribution strategies.
