Trump Weighs Annihilation as IRGC Strikes Tanker in Hormuz Strait
The warning follows continued unrest and military confrontations in the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has maintained heavy control and restricted passage. According to The Epoch Times, an Iranian military commander confirmed that the IRGC attacked a Togo-flagged oil tanker named the Trend as it attempted to transit the waterway. Ali Ozmaei, an admiral with the IRGC, stated through the semi-official Tasnim News agency that the vessel was struck after attempting an illegal passage under U.S. military watch, resulting in a fire that brought the ship to a halt.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported that multiple ships have been struck in and around the strait over a two-day period. Trump noted that all mines have been removed or detonated from international waters in the strait, warning that any ship or boat placing new mines would be destroyed, according to Yahoo News.
U.S. Blockade and Economic Pressures
The United States has maintained a naval blockade on Iranian ports, which the military’s Central Command stated has led to 104 ships being redirected. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced an economic pressure campaign dubbed Operation Economic Outcast
to isolate the Iranian regime and target entities supporting its oil trade, prompting new sanctions against financial institutions such as BitBank.
U.S. officials reported that the blockade and sanctions have caused severe economic pain inside Iran, leading to long fuel lines at gas stations and a collapse in currency value. Meanwhile, an IRGC spokesperson claimed that Iran and Oman had reached an agreement to control the Strait of Hormuz and share revenue from shipping fees. However, a U.S. official told New York Post that any such deal is not even close to done
and would be meaningless without the removal of the U.S. blockade.
Diplomatic Stalled Relations and Regional Outlook
Peace talks between the United States and Iran have remained stalled since the collapse of an interim agreement reached in June. Trump stated that he is not eager to restart formal negotiations, emphasizing that the strait remains open to all commercial traffic except ships traveling to or from Iran.
The conflict and regional security are scheduled for discussion at the United Nations General Assembly, where Trump is expected to meet with leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman. Meanwhile, defense officials have ordered U.S. forces in the Middle East to remain at current levels through the end of the year to keep Washington prepared for potential escalation.
