Microsoft has refreshed its Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch devices with six-core Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Plus chips, raising starting prices while boosting battery efficiency, graphics speed, and on-device AI capabilities ahead of an October 13 shipping date.
Microsoft used the Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii to roll out updated versions of its smaller mobile hardware. The refresh brings Qualcomm’s newer silicon architecture to the company’s compact form factors, pairing the new chips with brighter displays and higher baseline memory configurations.
Snapdragon X2 Plus Performance and Hardware Shifts in the Surface Line
The upgraded machines swap out older processors for Qualcomm’s six-core Snapdragon X2 Plus chips. Microsoft’s engineering teams collaborated directly with Qualcomm during silicon development to tune the platform specifically for thin, fanless hardware. That work focused heavily on maintaining sustained performance while keeping thermals quiet and power usage efficient.
Compared to previous generations, the new hardware delivers noticeable performance gains. Microsoft claims the updated laptops and tablets achieve up to 17 percent faster Office productivity workloads, up to 18 percent more efficient battery performance, more than 60 percent faster graphics processing, and up to 95 percent faster on-device AI inferencing on the integrated Qualcomm Hexagon NPU.
Microsoft emphasized the balance between battery life and everyday usability during the hardware unveiling. Microsoft stated that the Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch are two of their most versatile Surface devices, designed to deliver the performance and battery life people need in PCs they can comfortably carry all day.
Both devices abandon the previous generation’s 8GB base configurations, starting instead at 16GB of RAM with options to configure up to 24GB. Port selections remain identical to last year’s models, offering two USB-C 3.2 ports on both devices alongside Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 support. The 13-inch Surface Laptop also retains a dedicated USB-A 3.2 port and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Pricing, Display Upgrades, and New Software Features
The removal of the 8GB entry tier, combined with the upgraded silicon, translates to higher starting price tags across the board. The Surface Pro 12-inch now starts at $1,149.99 MSRP. The Surface Laptop 13-inch starts at $1,199.
Both machines benefit from upgraded PixelSense touchscreens that are 25 percent brighter at 500 nits. The Surface Pro 12-inch retains its 2196 x 1464 resolution display running at up to 90Hz, while the Surface Laptop 13-inch maintains a 1920 x 1280 panel capped at 60Hz. Battery longevity sees a measurable bump: the Surface Pro offers up to 13 hours of web browsing or 15.5 hours of local video playback, while the Surface Laptop reaches up to 22.5 hours of local video playback.
Accompanying the hardware launch is Microsoft Ink Canvas
, a new pen-first, AI-powered application designed for sketching, annotation, image generation, and text summarization. Preinstalled on the new Surface Pro, the app will also land on the Microsoft Store for other supported Windows devices.
Expanding the Ecosystem With a Haptic Surface Mouse
Microsoft rounded out the hardware release by introducing a matching Surface Mouse featuring integrated haptic feedback. Designed to mimic physical clicks, window snapping, and object alignment through subtle tactile pulses, the accessory includes an ambidextrous shape, a customizable action button for Copilot shortcuts, and Bluetooth 6.0 connectivity.
Preorders for the refreshed Surface Pro and Surface Laptop open alongside commercial availability configurations, which include an optional 5G model for business buyers of the tablet. General shipping for select markets begins on October 13.
