Tehran: Eight Iranian nationals convicted of theft may have their fingers cut off, reports say. The Abdurrahman Boromond Center for Human Rights (ABC), Iran’s leading human rights group, has expressed concern over the execution. ABC said in a statement that the execution of eight Iranian nationals in a Greater Tehran prison was “extremely inhumane”.

The group said three of the detainees had been transferred from the Orumia prison in northwestern Iran for execution. They said the sentence would be carried out if a device like a guillotine was activated at Evin Jail in Tehran. The sentence was set for June 8, but the date was later changed. ABC said the device was ready for amputation at the clinic in Evin and had been used to execute the punishment of at least one of them. They shared their concerns in a joint statement with the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN).

Roya Boromond, executive director of ABC, said the execution of such a cruel and inhumane punishment violated all bounds of humanity and dignity. He called on the international community to take immediate action against such executions. In Iran, amputation of fingers is permissible under Sharia law, but rarely.

The group said 356 people had been officially beheaded since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, and that the actual number was even higher. According to Iranian penal law, four fingers of the right hand can be amputated if convicted of theft. Norway-based Iran has executed at least 168 people in Iran in the first five months of 2022, according to the Human Rights Watch. The death penalty is 50 percent higher than last year.
