A new method of preserving the cultural heritage destroyed by Putin

by time news

A new project called Backup Ukraine, initiated by several organizations in the country and the UNESCO National Commission. It allows anyone to become an archivist by a simple three-dimensional scan of buildings and monuments using a dedicated mobile app called Polycam 3D.

The app stores the models in an open and secure online archive, “where no bomb can reach,” as written on the project’s home page. According to the creators of the project, the scans are of such high quality that the models can be projected in physical space to be explored for educational purposes and also used to reconstruct destroyed cultural objects.

The app is intended for use only in areas that are not in immediate danger, so as not to endanger the citizens who volunteer in performing the important craft.
