Pathanamthitta: The oil companies who are extorting the people by increasing the fuel prices, owe Rs 448.05 crore to the government in taxes. This is the figure till May 31 last.

The companies Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) are owed. Another company, Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL), has no arrears. Ernakulam Goods and Services Tax Department Special Circle Two is the reply to Manoj’s application.

It is said that the reason for the increase in arrears is the additional liability incurred by the assessment. This is due to frequent increase in fuel prices. Sales tax in Kerala is 30.08 per cent on petrol and 22.76 per cent on diesel. An additional sales tax of Rs 1 and 1 per cent cess is levied on both. 425.64 crores in tax arrears belongs to BPCL. 62.41 crores due to IOC.
