Trachoma: leading cause of infectious blindness worldwide

According to the WHO, trachoma is the leading cause of infectious blindness in the world. This public health problem, which is part of the Neglected Tropical Diseases, affects 44 countries and is responsible for blindness and visual impairment for approximately 1.9 million people.

Trachoma is caused by an intracellular bacterium, Chlamydia trachomatis. The infection is transmitted by contact with the discharge from the eyes or the nose of infected people, especially young children who form the main reservoir of the infection. It is also transmitted by flies, which have come into contact with the eyes or nose of infected people. Why are women more affected than men? Where are the searches?
