More victims in Karuvannur scam, Raman who invested 10 lakhs did not pay, surgery stalled and died

Thrissur: Relatives of 75-year-old Raman, who died last Monday in Karuvannur, have denied money for treatment. A letter was written to the bank asking for three lakh rupees for Raman’s brain surgery but it was not given. Ten lakh rupees are deposited in the bank in the name of Raman.

Raman, a resident of Mapranam Porathiseri, and his elder sister Bhargavi had invested Rs. Both were under the care of their sister’s daughter. The savings were for treatment and rest of life. The disease was brain shrinkage. Three lakhs was required for surgery. This was informed to the bank on 20th of last month.

‘I have 40 lakhs in the bank, but I didn’t give it, the treatment was done by borrowing’; Karuvannur victims say

Thrissur: Porinchu, a native of Mapranam, is a victim of Karuvannur Bank’s bloodless act. In the name of himself and his family, he deposited 40 lakh rupees in Porinchu Bank. They also did not get the money back as the bank was defrauded. Meanwhile, Porinchu, who is in the hospital, underwent two heart surgeries by borrowing money. Porinju painfully says that when he asked for money back for the operation, the bank was ruthless.

“The cost of surgery and hospital treatment was huge. He came home after paying the hospital money after taking loans from many people. People started coming to ask for the money they had borrowed back at home. They say that they want to return the money they helped Chetan when he was in need. That’s right.” But if the bank gave me my money, I could have returned the borrowed money, Porinju says painfully. Porinju is now resting after heart surgery.

The family of 75-year-old Raman, who died last Monday, is raising a similar allegation. Raman, a resident of Mapranam Porathiseri, and his elder sister Bhargavi had invested Rs. Both were under the care of their sister’s daughter. The savings were for treatment and rest of life. Raman’s illness was brain shrinkage. Three lakh rupees were required for the surgery. This was informed to the bank on 20th of last month. After a month, the bank gave only fifty thousand rupees. Raman died last Monday as the surgery could not be performed.
