Japan and the United States are going to create a hub for international joint research, the main purpose of which will be the development and production of next-generation semiconductors, Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Koichi Hagiuda said after a meeting with the American delegation.

The first economic meeting of the US and Japanese representatives in the 2+2 format was held in Washington. The Japanese delegation was headed by Economy, Industry and Trade Minister Koichi Hagiuda and Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, while the American side was represented by Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Trade Minister Gina Raimondo.

It is reportedly planned to create a hub that will be open to foreign companies and research institutes. It will concentrate the technological capabilities of Japan, leading institutions and scientists from Japanese companies and universities, primarily from the University of Tokyo, will be involved in the work of the hub. “Japan, along with the US, will lead the way in this international cooperation,” said Hagiuda.

According to the minister, in the current situation, issues of foreign policy and security “are inseparable from the economy.” He stated that “the unilateral use of economic force in order to push through one’s foreign policy demands in violation of international rules is unacceptable.”

Reportedly, Tokyo plans to develop domestic semiconductor production, thereby ensuring its economic security and the stability of global supplies.
